Run DSM 5 from open source on any x86

I stumbled upon http://xpenology.me/introduction/ This is a boot program for x86 processors. You put it on bootable media (CD, USB), along with a few other files, using an ISO image file to bootable media utility. Once booted, you can then install Synology's DSM5 OS on a blank disk in that x86...

NAS (any brand) external USB drive bay - issues

NAS (any brand) external USB drive bay - issues. In my case, Synology DS212. I just bought a $45 nice steel box 2 drive bay box. Has USB3 connector. The chip inside is a Prolific USB3 to SATA bridge. It has these switch-selected modes: NORMAL - just a USB hub so the host sees 2 drives JBOD -...

    20/40 MHz coexistence

As you may know, 40MHz mode in 2.4GHz is recommended by many people only for those who live in a rural setting. The 40MHz mode means your WiFi is using 2/3 of the entire 2.4GHz band, and you compete with neighbors' WiFi for air time.

New OS: DSM 6 - worth the upgrade risk/hassle for a 2 bay?

New OS: DSM 6 - worth the upgrade risk/hassle for a 2 bay? As I read the new features, and those that will run on a 2 bay, I see only a new backup utility. Unclear if it's an improvement over my current use of "Backup and Restore" plus the add-in "Time (file versioning) Backup". Any other...

ISP changed IP addresses and hosed up locale

Time Warner made a rare change to IP addresses (probably for all in my region). I'm in So. Calif. The new address is somehow (?) affiliated with Hawaii (but I'm not). Thus, ads, speedtest.net, and other not expected things are hosed up now. Though I'd like to visit Hawaii again, I don't need...

    Dell buying EMC

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Dell Inc [DI.UL], the world's third-biggest maker of computers, is set to gain unconditional EU antitrust approval for its $67 billion bid for data storage company EMC Corp, two people familiar with the matter said on Thursday. Dell unveiled the deal in October last year...

WiFi router with DNS masq in factory firmware?

Is there a WiFi router with DNS masq in factory firmware? So I can create a list of up to 10 or so LAN IP addresses (DHCP reservations) and give them LAN-only names? like joeblow = 192.168.1.x or some such. Not an Internet DNS server - just on my LAN.

Time Warner San Diego speeds to 117Mbps/11Mbps

Time Warner San Diego speeds to 117Mbps/11Mbps - a bit more or less depending on choice of server for testing. Long promised. Unannounced that I could see. But I accidentally discovered the speed-up today. 8 streams @QAM256 on the downstream. enclosed screen grab

    Linux NASes and USB3 hub

I suspect this is endemic to Linux-based NASes so.... My DS212 NAS (latest DSM OS) won't discover and mount a USB3 drive plugged into a USB3 hub that is connected to the NAS. I tried 3 different brands of hubs and 2 disks. It's as if there's no device driver for USB3 hubs? Same hubs/drives work...

Vertical jumpy pogo-stick web pages are back again Every page display. 2 seconds after the first rendering, the top of page banner add size changes. You wind up having to wait, else you click just as it moves vertically.

    Trouble at Seagate?

Something's amiss at Seagate (symbol STX) - on how the company's being managed. Some blame the impact of faster than expected adoption of lower priced SSDs. prior 12 months, STX is down 24% vs. the NASDAQ index being up 5%. And WD is up over 80% and they've stayed out of SSDs so far after a...

Consumer routers: Can WAN side IP addr. be non-routable?

Consumer routers: Can WAN side IP addr. be non-routable? Such as WAN side is 192.168.0.x and LAN side is 192.168.1.x. Or even 192.168.1.x on both WAN and LAN? Reasoning: When my beloved (not) TWC internet services is down once again, I can plug the ethernet cable from a Sierra Wireless...

Do your systems allow port 22 from the WAN?

Do your systems allow port 22 from the WAN along with very obtuse passwords, no anonymous, no telnet? 22 is of course SSH and on some SOHO NASes, it's the default port for special applications. Or does everyone avoid the well known ports from outside access? And use auto-ban? The number of...

    QNAP file versioniong capability

For no good reason, though I'm happy with my NAS (Synology), but since it's 3 yrs old and just 1.6GHz single-core, I'm pondering a next -NAS. With drive capacity we have, I'll stay with a 2-bay, non-RAID. In 3 years, I've not filled 2TB. I don't do movie/video ripping. Just lots of software...

    Pity the DNS-illiterate - CNAME + DDNS help s.v.p.

Someone who understands DNSes and all the ill-defined jargon... take pity. Goal: DDNS updates for my rarely changing IPv4 address given me my my beloved ISP - synch that IP address to my domain name. Somehow with CNAME records and all that jibberish: my registrar: Google domains, for...

Clone NAS drive with (e.g.) Acronis?

I'm thinking of trying this, to get a solid backup of my NAS OS drive volume (non-RAID), before I take-a-chance on the major NAS OS (DSM) upgrade. (Synology DSM 4.3 now). Shut down NAS (and it's attached USB3 backup 2TB disk). The 2nd drive in the NAS is a separate file system/volume for Time...

My DSM 5.2 update paranoia - Justified?

a curious (in many ways) posting from the Synology user forum Their website shows that DSM 5.2 has been downloaded over 1 million times in a week... WOW. I had been staying away because of the apparent trouble listed on the forum. Seems like maybe that is a really small percentage of the installs.
