Is a NAS really the right solution for my home office?

My Reply Plugging the Mac Mini into the ethernet port of your router would theoretically increase your speeds/latency, but I don't think you would be able to tell a difference. Using Lion Server would add features, but it shouldn't make your file access any speedier. Most hard drives will...

Is a NAS really the right solution for my home office?

Stick with the Mac Mini First a question. Does you Mac Mini have one or two hard drives in it? Now to answer your questions. 1) You could buy a USB/Firewire Raid device that would connect to the Mac Mini and be your storage. Just make sure its large enough to fit everything you...

Internet Speed Test Part II I decided to run an internet speed test using three scenarios: 1: Laptop -->Router-->Wireless-Bridge-->Wifi 2: Laptop -->Wireless-Bridge-->Wifi 3: Laptop -->Wifi I used www.speedtest.net/ for my speed test results. After running the speed tests one after...

    Client based Wireless Repeater/Bridge

Wireless Speeds I've been successfully running the above configuration for about 2 months now, and it works pretty good. The one thing that I have noticed is this: When running a Internet bandwidth speedtest while connected to the building wifi, I get around 9 MB/s. When I then connect to...

Apple TV2 - home sharing issue - works wired not wireless same router????

Wifi Timeout Is your library large? Maybe the wireless is timing out? Otherwise I would make sure there aren't any crazy wireless settings in your router blocking content, or maybe find the ports needed for Homesharing and open them on all firewalls involved in the internal network.

    Client based Wireless Repeater/Bridge

Tried this using a Buffalo Ethernet-to-Wireless G bridge, and my trusty Linksys WRT54GL. So far this has been working great. Thanks for the help.

    Client based Wireless Repeater/Bridge

Interesting idea, I will have to try the router/ethernet bridge thing. I happen to have both of those things sitting around.

    Client based Wireless Repeater/Bridge

Excellent information in the article. I want my wireless devices to connect to my repeater, so that I can take advantage of accessing my printer/NAS through my repeater. Also, is it possible to not allow people to access my NAS/Printer when using a Repeater? Could this be accomplished with a...

    Router with wireless WAN (bridge)

Routers that will support Repeater/Bridge Hello: I did some research this weekend and found three different routers that should easily handle this task, plus. Buffalo has three different models that come with DD-WRT on them from the factory. The models are: WZR-HP-G300NH...

NAS for local backup and remote backup

Some Backup options The key thing for your local NAS is that it SHOULD support rsync. Many NAS devices do not support rsync. You can find NAS devices that backup to external devices, but do not support an open implementation of rsync (meaning you can only backup to NASes from the same brand)...

    Multi User NAS for Mac?

Do the Synology NAS drives offer a method to limit the amount of space a Time Machine backup/user uses on the NAS? It seems like most NAS devices do not have such a method. This is one reason why I looked at going with a TonidoPlug or Iomega iConnect for Time Machine backups and a NAS for any...

    Iomega iConnect Review

Some USB drives have a "built-in" sleep, does the iConnect not even allow this to happen? I read the iConnect review and it mentions the ability to use rsync but after talking to a Iomega rep they said the following: Zurge: Can i then use the rsync functionality to backup that volume to...

WD My Book World Edition II (white bar)

I'm sorry but I am a little confused. Can the WD My Book World II (newest version) do a backup from itself (NAS) to another NAS and/or a USB drive? If it can, is this backup automatic or do you need to do this manually?

    Smart SOHOs Don't Do Raid!

@kfortier5 Your ability to have access to the drive located in the NAS is dependent on a few things: 1. What went wrong with the NAS If both drives are damaged due to a power supply failure or RAID card failure then no, you wouldn't be able to do what you wanted. On the other hand, a power...

Home NAS for Mixed OS household

Re: mccaberm I personally think the Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server is a fine option for you. It would give you any/all abilities that you have talked about. One thing to note about the server is this though, a 1TB Mac Mini with the server installed is going to give you 500GB of available...
