    HP ProCurve 1800-24G and throughput...

I have the HP 1810-24G but I've yet to do trunking with it. However, I do use it with my home NAS which the array is capable of over 400MB/sec, but I'm limited to my current 1Gb line speed. I'm easily able to saturate the line while transferring large files to my NAS. If you want a...

    Switch downstream to the router

You can easily connect an inexpensive basic switch running preferably at 100Mb speed or higher to any of the four LAN ports on your router. You can continue to connect three devices directly to the router and then the fourth to the new switch. If you get an 4 or 8 port switch, you can connect...

    My DIY NAS Project

Yep, I'll have two separate Perc 6i controllers that won't know about each other with two separate arrays. I wasn't looking for a redundant controller or fail over capability. Where did you find that the Perc controllers can work in a dual active mode? Was this some kind of specialize back...

    My DIY NAS Project

The Dell Perc 6i can run 16 drives according to Dell. There are connections for 8 drives on the card. The only way I know of going beyond that is to get some kind of HP SAS expander solution. Since the Perc 6i only cost me $150/each it was much simpler and possibly cheaper for me to buy two...

    My DIY NAS Project

That is pretty strange results. Did you make sure the network card was adjusted properly in each OS? There are a few settings you can tweak like jumbo frames and also flow control and priority. I'm no expert with those, but you might want to play around with the settings to see if you can...

    My DIY NAS Project

No, not entirely. I'm only using Windows 7 Ultimate as my client/workstation for the testing. The server (NAS) portion is running OpenFiler.

    My DIY NAS Project

I haven't seen anyone else report the issue I've had, so I'm hoping I just got two units that were bad, or there is some other variable I'm missing in my troubleshooting. If the Icy Dock I ordered has the same problem, chances are it's either my Perc or cabling, or maybe the hard drives. I've...

    My DIY NAS Project

I have some bad news about my NAS build that I've been meaning to come back and update once I had more to report. I've had some issues with the Supermicro 5-drive bay which caused me some performance degradation. I was finding that after using the NAS array for a little while that my transfer...

Best 2TB Drive for home NAS

Take a look at the link I posted regarding TLER and CCTL. Some drives will wait indefinitly when it encounters a read/write and because of this it will cause a drive to drop out of a raid array, cause performance problems and be a pain in the butt to deal with on some drives. There have been...

Best 2TB Drive for home NAS

I'm a fan of Samsung drives for many reasons. For what you plan to use your NAS for, even the 5400RPM drives will perform well with 4 drives in RAID 5. The Samsung 2TB F3EG is at a reasonable price ($149) compared to the other brands. The drive is listed on the compatibility matrix which is a...

Best 2TB Drive for home NAS

That's not simply answered without some more details on your NAS and your expected usage. What is your home NAS (make/model/home built)? What do you plan to use it for? What's your budget? Do you require drives that will be RAID capable? Do you have noise requirements? Heat requirements...

    My DIY NAS Project

What do you mean by tests on the server drivers? I do have benchmarks for individual drives and also the actual array by itself outside of the NAS. They were tested under Server 2003 R2 64-bit with a variety of benchmarking tools. I have links for the tools in my results pages linked below if...

    My DIY NAS Project

Sorry I didn't mention that. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my desktop/workstation. I bench marked the Samsung 1TB F3 drive as a single drive and it was capable of those speeds especially with larger size files. The average read speed in some cases was 117 MB/sec.

    My DIY NAS Project

Thanks for the tips on the Intel card. I'll keep my eyes open for deals on eBay and craigslist. I do know someone who is willing to sell me theirs which is barely used, so I do have some options. Strangely enough I may need to buy it much sooner than I thought. I turned my NAS on just a few...

    My DIY NAS Project

The last piece to share are my next phases with this project. As you can probably see from the images I only have one of the Perc cards installed and I mentioned having two of them. Phase 2: Right now my video card is using one of the two 16x PCIe slots that I would need for the Perc. I plan...

Best drives for NAS Fileserver - throughput or high I/O?

I wrote up my description over here for people to check out and criticize if need be. :-)

I tried to include the images in the original post but the forum software said my post was too long! The forum also won't allow me to post more than 4 images even as thumbnails so here are a few key images and also a link to the album for those who want to see more. Images:

    My DIY NAS Project

I've been reading this site for a while and finally got into building my own NAS device for a variety of reasons which I'll get into. I just wanted to share my build and experience for others that might be interested. Need: I set out to build or acquire a NAS device to meet several needs...

Linux raid 5 poor rebuilding performance?

I know it's been a while since you received an answer, but yes hardware RAID will absolutely initialize faster than software RAID. I built my RAID 5 with 5x 1.5TB Samsung F2 drives in both ways. First I used my onboard SATA controller and built the array with OpenFiler software RAID. The...

    New Nas Build

What do you plan to use your NAS for and how important is performance for small, medium, and large file types? How many users will access the system at any given time? How much do you want to be able to expand your system as your data grows over time (ports, PCIe slots, drives, etc)? I...
