    anyone remember Pluto? (pre linuxMCE)

I was just curious if anyone here remembered when the Pluto home automation software came out. I'm told this turned into LinuxMCE(?) but couldn't verify. The original website seems gone as are the ISO images. I'm wondering if any other projects might've integrated it's code or if there are...

is 14tb Easystore a shingled drive?

I cannot find definitive information and don't know whether this detail even changes. (like where it wasn't when it first came out but might be now) Does anyone know or can anyone direct me to to where to find constantly updated data about which drives are PMR vs SMR?

Edgerouter X speeds with QoS on? (+VPN/worst case)

I've seen benchmarks but I don't recall seeing any with quality of service turned on. I'm even further curious whether other features can slow it down further - ie whats an absolute worst case that this router is capable of handling? What slows it down the most? I'm looking for something that...

I think I want to use SnapRAID (talk me into or out of it :)

Btw I haven't caught up on ANY of the past postings yet, was out of town and there was a bunch of talk on some threads here if i'm not mistaken... so if something is redundant advance apologies, I just wanted to sit this out to bake for a little first. I stumbled across SnapRAID the other...

what even ARE all the modern open source router options?

By modern I mean the software is up to date - not that it's only running on fast modern routers. Even "fast ethernet" 100mbit routers can be on the list provided the aftermarket firmware upgrades are not 8 years old like apparently DD-WRT is.(?) Reading responses to my other post here on QoS...

Mirror drives, or whole servers instead?

Reading this article has had me thinking - http://jrs-s.net/2015/02/06/zfs-you-should-use-mirror-vdevs-not-raidz/ - which basically says RAID1 (equivalence) is better than RAID5, and I fully understand the argument. It's about tradeoffs of storage efficiency vs failure tolerance. What I found...

Erasure Code support? ("postRAID" protection) for offline archives incl LTO Ultrium tape?

So i'm reading various articles about the "postRAID" era. If you want to see what i'm reading i'll just link them at the bottom with some excerpts. The 'nightmare' of hard disk implosion is less of an issue with modern RAID NAS's but the bigger secret growing problem is the data corruption...

QoS issues for VOIP (are some better than others)

I currently have a NetGear N600 'wireless dual band router' (although I dont use the wireless because it literally gives me headaches its so powerful) and recently switched to a VOIP phone. Despite turning QoS on I noticed that VOIP completely goes to crap whenever another computer is hammering...

am I silly for wanting Fibrechannel or/and Infiniband?

Since i'm slowly working through the process of designing up a home NAS/SAN which I hope to grow over time, and I see that "this issue" is a big one affecting which NAS software is even an option I decided to re-ask it sort of head on... Currently faster-than-gigabit Infiniband and FibreChannel...

PXE boot Windows from a NAS? (and even using a net share for a swapfile?)

Related to my two other big posts, just decided it deserves it's own topic to avoid confusion and because this is very specific and possibly of interest to others (for future searches, if good info ends up in this thread) because this is the focus on the NAS/performance side of the question...

Where2ask - diskless workstations, daily drive reimaging, & related for SOHO/MOHO

Or maybe it's here? "Where" meaning the right subforum here, or even entire different boards at other places. MOHO - mid sized home office. :) Ie stretching the definition of 'small' a bit but without a normal business level financial base. Short version of my problem(s) - I am making...

What do I need to learn? (need to design a SAN/NAS up to 300TB))

Hello, i'm totally new here and if my name gives you any clue (once burned, twice shy) i'm somebody who learned the HARD WAY. Now i'm trying to learn how to do things the right way. To keep this from getting too huge (i'll happily fill anyone in on the boring details if you ask) i'll just jump...
