    SMTP / Email firewall

thanks everyone. I ended up doing it in two parts. I installed pfSense on an old machine as a router / firewall for my servers (I've got 3 at the house), and then installed Ubuntu Server 8.10 as a new mailserver, with SpamAssassin and ClamAV as plug-ins I attempted to go with IPCop, but for...

    SMTP / Email firewall

Thanks for both of your responses. I may end up going the Google Apps route eventually, but I want to try my own way first (stubborn, if nothing else). The IPCop + Copfilter combo looks promising

    SMTP / Email firewall

I've been running a small email server for a while, and I've seen that I've been getting a lot of spam. I assumed it was due to a faulty setup on my part, so I did a fresh install of the application on difference machine. I've got DNS blacklisting running, but it's still getting through. It...

Need to buy used Cisco Equip.

I've seen a lot of Cisco equipment on Craigslist lately. Some of them state it was for their Cisco testing (and they don't need it anymore), and other are people who are liquidating businesses that closed up shop

    media network

I can't say if the testing supports this, but I've always seemed to get better performance when I match brand names. As for streaming content within the home (I am assuming Windows Media Center?), then it depends if you're watching it "live" or off the stuff that's been recorded...

    Rebuilding Home Network - Advice?

I'm getting ready to rebuild my home network. When I started, I had 1 server acting as a web / email / FTP all in one, along with some shared files for the house. Over time, my server activity has increased, and I've added a 2nd server (soon to add a 3rd), and the number of machines themselves...

One router that does it all

agreed. also, having a second switch could help alleviate any slowdown or bottlenecking you might get.

    home network shared with neighbor

Bury a cable? Again, this might be more effort than it's worth, but what about burying a CAT6 cable between the two houeses, and set it up that way?

    home network shared with neighbor

FTP to solve the problem? If they're next door, and the main purpose is to share files, why not set up an FTP server? Lifehacker has a great article on how to build one for free. Lifehacker Home Series - FTP You could set up a main "folder" on a PC, and subsequent machines can sync to it...

    NAS O/S for a 64 bit environment?

I'm finally getting ready (those darn kids, always wanting food!) to put together a home NAS system. My machines are the following: HP workhorse PC: Vista 64 bit HP family PC: Vista 64 bit Toshiba laptop: Vista 64 bit Gateway media center PC: XP Pro MCE2005 Intel-based server running...

Are Three Drives the Charm? Thecus N3200 Reviewed

3 drives + RAID? This looks like a good setup for what I'm looking for (a one-source media storage vault). I didn't notice what the total drive size limitation was. What would be the individual and total drive limits?

Gigabit Wireless N Router with a print server?

I've noticed that most of the time, it's difficult to get scanning to work on a print server (I've tried numerous ways). However, I've got an HP multi-function setup on the home PC and shared thoughout the network, and the scanning works well.

Does anyone ever Digg SNB articles?

i've never been one to use Digg (or similar) myself, however, i've emailed links to numerous articles to people I know. and if I ever start a tech-related blog (which I've thought about), I would certainly include a link

Broadband and Internet Security on 64 bit architecture with XP Pro 64 bit

In regards to the internet software, i've been running Vista 64bit for a while now. Is this a home or office setup? Here's a link to 64bit compatible anti-virus apps Start64.com article I've seen that start64.com is a good resource for 64 bit issues in general. Also, any specific reason for...

Putting together the SNB RAID NAS Explorer

I'm really looking forward to this as well, since it's the next piece in my home network setup. My linux experience is non-existent, so anything I put together would be a Windows flavor (XP or Vista). Any thoughts about comparing 32bit vs 64 bit?

Vista / XP home workgroup setup?

i may go ahead and re-run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP machine. I've also thought about upgrading it to Vista as well, since it has more than enough juice to do it. I've really begun to like how Vista handles sharing within the workgroup, so for consistency's sake, I might go ahead.

Vista / XP home workgroup setup?

I recently purchased a new HP desktop for the home (mainly for my wife), and it came with Vista 64bit. I also upgraded my laptop to Vista 64bit. Both are running fine, with no issues, including being able to map two network drives from my home server. However.... The XP machines in my house...

    HTPC or Set Top Box

home media center I've got one running as well. It's an older Celeron-based machine, but it's still pretty quiet. It's running XP Media Center 2005. All the movies I ripped are on a internal IDE hard drive, and the MP3 collection is in a shared network location accessed via wireless. To date...

Sounds great! I'm looking forward to it.

    Building NAS from scratch?

Yep, I read over that and got the impression that there was a wide range of options. Considering that Scotty hadn't posted the tests on his new NAS yet, I guess I'm out of luck. With people selling "old" computers on places like craigstlist.org for next to nothing, I figure I can get a good...
