Guide to understanding Asus System router logs

I would guess that most people wait until something goes wrong or doesn't work, then go hunting in the log for anything that looks related or important. I'm sure there are some that look at it more closely too, but I doubt the average user bothers util required. Most of it (at least the default...

Recommendation on NAS for home use?

What is it that your current NAS is not doing that you need it to? Sounds like your needs are pretty basic. I run 15+ year old (D-Link DNS323) NAS that haven't seen an update in over a decade and they still perform the job I wanted them to when I got them. I also have somewhat newer units to...

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 3004.388.9 is now available

A minor UI glitch. Who, other than you, would notice or care? I wouldn't have seen it other than I tried a long name just to verify as I had read about it.

Release Asuswrt-Merlin 3004.388.9 is now available

It is ALWAYS a really good idea to reboot, and remove any USB devices plugged into the router. This fixes many of the issues when an update is unsuccessful, or a good practice to ensure it goes well the first time through.

Video Doorbell can't connect to internet

Sounds like the next step before wasting time on anything else.

Router replacement frequency? And a recommendation request

My solution to extending the life of my router, is to sit behind the one my ISP provides. I run double nat so my infrastructure doesn't change at all if my ISP upgrades, or I change ISPs. I only upgrade my router when it is appropriate for security or hardware necessity.

Which NAS-software for a low end device? It must use all disks for the OS/settings, support encryption etc.

Your data, your security, your performance, your choice :) Try what you think will work for you. If it doesn't meet your expectations, looks for something better.

Very Strange WAN Login Entry…WAN Routing 192.168.1.20??? HUH?

An old connection from a mapped drive? Another device on your network? As you say, it's a local address so it has to be something inside your network. Is that the actual log entry? i.e. no MAC address listed? Looks like a generic ping. Turn off your devices, then turn them on one at a time to...

    Malware damaging ASUS routers?

By leaving it running, you are continuing to support whatever nefarious activity is going on. If you don't control it and have limited bandwidth, reset it. Worst case, turn it off. You will either be able to recover it, or you won't. Waiting isn't the solution.

Printer is staying awake and phone battery drains overnight.

Try disabling wifi on your phone for a bit to see if the battery discharges at the same rate. Maybe it's just time for a new battery/phone?

    New ASUS Router Question?

At best, you can count on about 2 years out of any current tech before standards and baselines change. Sometimes you get lucky and a device will run for many years, but there are never any guarantees.

Which NAS-software for a low end device? It must use all disks for the OS/settings, support encryption etc.

Being old and unsupported isn't really an issue in my perspective. I run 3x D-Link NAS boxes from 2008. They perform today just as well as they did starting in 2008. The 3rd is essentially a spare part units in case one of the other fails. They aren't "internet facing" so no security concerns...

OpenVPN Client Connection through existing OpenVPN Router Connection causes DISCONNECT

Or it's the NSA shutting it down for bouncing through too many VPNs at once. [Removing tinfoil hat]

    2 ISP and 2 routers ,+ mesh

Rather than a complex setup for testing, why not just connect one, run some tests, connect the other, run similar tests, then decide which is better? Otherwise, you can setup both, and just change the default gateway to point to one or the other.

Maybe they do have the same girlfriend, and that was part of the problem. The solution was to find a new one.

How to change login system name?

I would assume that it reads the value from the nvram variable nvram dump|grep AX88U model=RT-AX88U build_name=RT-AX88U computer_name=RT-AX88U But changing it, or erasing it, would or could have very unexpected results as I'm sure it is required elsewhere. More curious as to why it is an...

388.8.4 release seem to have cause AIMESH stability issue

An electronic (non-wifi) digital timer was what I was going to suggest if this is truly a concern. You may want to invest in an RF metre to see if there is really any substantial benefit. There is likely more ambient radiation from sources you cannot controll.

388.8.4 release seem to have cause AIMESH stability issue

Why is it important to turn off your wifi on a schedule? Maybe there is another option to resolve whatever it is you think you are gaining?
