    GS108E-100NAS Configure w/o Utility

I have an office with only Macs that has one of these switches. Is there documentation anywhere on how to manage it without the Win ONLY utility?

    Yes, Routers do die

Your time must be "free"? I'm currently seeing if I want to repair my washing machine. But that's worth an hour or two of my time to save spending $700+ at this time. But to repair a $50 to $100 router, not so much.

    Yes, Routers do die

Heat is the biggest issue. And people putting them in places where convection currents can't form and carry away the heat don't help. Many people put their router and modem behind the TV in the cabinet on top of the DVR and DVD player.

    Apple AirPort Express [2012] Reviewed

What an APE is mean to do Several comments at the start of this thread debated what the main point of the APE was. Here's the deal. The vast majority of current Apple non business customers are consumers who have no idea about how networking works. And most of the people buying Apple stuff...

    Gigabit speed possible over Cat5?

It was discovered long after Cat5 was spec'd that Gig ENet would only work with Cat5 cables shorter than about 90 meters or so. So Cat5e was developed which modified some of the specifications of Cat5 to allow Gig E at lengths up to 100m. So unless you have runs in your house longer than 90M...

TP-Link TL-R600VPN? Other VPN router suggestions?

Based on discussion here and elsewhere these seem to have more than a few oddball bugs which may or may not affect your intended use. Search for it here and via Google.

    Small Business Router Recomendation?

Free? I paid over $250 each for the pfsense units I'm using. :D But the pfsense forums work because some of the developers hang out there and so the signal to noise ratio is quite high. Unlike the various Mozilla forums where it seems the devs seem to avoid so the answers you get are wrong half...

    Small Business Router Recomendation?

Thanks for the info but it would be nice if their support knew such answers. The pfsense forums are much better at answering similar questions. And from my point of view they seem to have fewer bugs than the big named units under $1000 in price.

New to cabeling - Various cable or switches?

In general if you're not video editing or working with large graphics and/or CAD files you should be fine. If at all possible pull two cables. One as a spare. Or keep a 100' patch cord around so when one breaks you can run it down the hall till you pull the broken cable out and put a new one...

    10/100 Bridge and 100 HUB

Some older Netopia gear I held onto thinking I might have a use for it. One is a 10/100 bridge. One is a 16 port 100 baseT HUB. $10 to cover my cost to ship it. Private message me if interested.

    Rj45 Socket back to cable?

I'll disagree here. Jacks are designed to connect to solid wire. Plugs to stranded. If you want to go the other way you'll have to special order the plug or jack. The existing wire you have is about 99.99999% likely to be solid. A normal plug expects stranded wire and so the connection...

Gigabit network, CAT 5 patch cables

Cat5e was a modification to the Cat5 spec when it was discovered that Cat5 would only work with gigE up to about 90 meters. As long as your runs are under say 50 to 80 meters I'd not get excited about it. But I would work on gradually replacing them with Cat5e or Cat6 over time as they need to...

Looking for a proper Dual WAN solution

There are a lot of pre-built PFSense options out there. I just installed one of these: http://store.netgate.com/Netgate-m1n1wall-2D3-2D13-Black-P216C83.aspx And am getting our full limit of 44/22 on it. Biggest issue for me is just how small the thing is. I should have gotten another...

    Small Business Router Recomendation?

Finally installed one of these on a Metro Ethernet service. It had no trouble running at 44/22 per speedtest.net I think that's the cap on our line.

    Small Business Router Recomendation?

I've set up several of the RVxxx units. /24 or smaller on all of them. Don't know about the v3 units but I suspect that would be one of the dividing lines that Cisco would use to move someone to the commercial product lines rather than the consumer or prosumer lines.

    Small Business Router Recomendation?

Again. Time is money. And I don't have two gig NIC cards just sitting around. Or a system that I can easily wipe.

Cat5 Wiring in Home- but no connection?

Cat 5 wire is all color coded the same. And it would be a really bad installation if both ends of your wires were not done to the same standards. It is very likely that you have Leviton Quick port jacks in your walls. If so they have color codes on them for both wiring standards. And if you...
