New Around Here
Hi all,

With my new gigabit internet they gave me a Zyxel T-50 but I already have the Asus AC66u

ISP Router: VMG8825-T50
https://service-provider.zyxel.com/global/en/products/dsl-cpes/vdsl/residential-iads/vmg8825-t50k
It has a EcoNet CPU, dual core 2x 900mhz

Asus AC66U
https://www.asus.com/nl/Networking-IoT-Servers/WiFi-Routers/ASUS-WiFi-Routers/RTAC66U/

Runs on a Dual core 2x 600mhz Broadcom chip
https://www.broadcom.com/products/wireless/wireless-lan-infrastructure/bcm4706

On the naked eye the EcoNet is 300mhz faster but different chips can be less or more efficient. Zyxels only talks a bit about the 802.11ac wave 2 tech that this one carries, no idea about the other technology.

Now, the questions:
- would the lack of functionality on the T-50 mean a smaller attack surface?
- can I achieve the same with the Johns Fork-AC66u? I don't use any functions actually.
- Hardware-wise, which one is actually better?

The VMG8825-T50 is a VDSL modem + wireless router. The RT-AC66U does not have a VDSL modem.

Do you have the original RT-AC66U or the newer RT-AC66U_B1? The original has the processor you linked to which has a single core.

If your internet connection is VDSL then you have to use the Zyxel anyway.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

I am afraid. i didn't do my homework that well. I have indeed the single core 600mhz one. The T50 is a modem/router combi indeed. Since I only have internet and no TV I can use the Asus with the correct VLAN settings.

But even if the EcoNet CPU would be less efficient, it's 300mhz more ánd dual-core.

Thank you again :)
