New Around Here
Only unpacked this baby last week, been over the moon with my wifi range and speed to numerous devices.

I use Servio to stream to my Sony TV, but it requires the PC to be on and does encounter issues from time to time. So I thought I'd check out using the USB drive function on the router to place my media files on.

I feel I'm getting close.

HDD = Sony HD-EGS http://www.sony-asia.com/product/hd-eg5 I formatted it to NTFS

The ASUS seams to be picking it up, as per below. And when I go into my computer > manage and try to add the drive, it picks it up, but returns an error "Disk Management could not start Virtual Disk Service"

Have tried to map the drive, no success

As the error says, this remote disk does not support VDS. This is a Windows proprietary technology.

What are you trying to do?

Check the system log (both on the router and the PC, i.e. Event Viewer on Windows) for related messages.

Ran CHKDSK on the drive after another clean TNFS format, no errors.

Tried to add the drive again via manage computer. Getting the following error in windows event viewer "DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer GMEDIA using any of the configured protocols."

So I tried using a 8g thumb drive (NTFS) instead, and it has worked with no problems whats so ever.

Ummm?

Tried to chuck in the 500 gig Sony HDD and no luck

I'm trying to connect to the HDD connected via the USB on the router, from windows explorer so that I can copy files across to it ongoing.

Simply connect to it as a SMB network drive.

Simply connect to it as a SMB network drive.

I have been succesull in mapping the drive with the 8gig USB stick, but not the 500 gig Sony HDD.

So the issue is the HDD, could it be a power issue? this 500 gig Sony HDD does not have its own power (I mean its only getting power over USB)

Should I try another format type?

I tried one more thing.

I connected the HDD = Sony HD-EGS http://www.sony-asia.com/product/hd-eg5 to my computer and went into the sharing properties under manage. I noticed that "users" did not have "write". I updated the permissions and then put it back in the router. It now works

Getting about a 25mbs tranfer rate from my pc the HDD connected to my router.

Do you have anything on the drive currently? What file format do you use? I have no problem copying files to from my attached storage using either smb or ftp

You're replying to an almost month old thread that the last post states as now working. ;)
