alright, what I do not understand is, after doing the reset, the problem will not be solved until I flash the new firmware. So, if the problem is not solved after reset, how do I access the setup page to flash the new firmware?

I'm kind of puzzled at one of your earlier responses above in the thread on the first page, in which you wrote "I do not have a PC or laptop with ethernet port."

How then did you set up your router in the first place? What are you using, a tablet? A phone? Even netbooks have Ethernet ports. Akkkk. You must be using an Apple MacBook. Figures....who leaves out an Ethernet port (and charges you a premium for doing so)?

no macbook, no. I've got the Razer Blade, the 14" version. Which has no ethernet port.

As for the first setup, you are able to connect to it using the wps, aren't you?

Hey,

For the last couple of days I have been trying to access the router settings page, but all I am getting when loading 192.168.1.1 (or the user.asuscomm.com site) is this message:

whaa_zpscd1bd4a2.jpg

I have tried rebooting the router, as well as my laptop; same result.

can someone please let me know what do I need to do to get back to the settings page?

EDIT: tried disconnecting from the 5ghz band and connect to the 2.4 one, same result...

I came to the forums this morning to find a work around for the very same splash page. (Looking for a solution short of a hard reset.)

I had just upgraded both an RT-AC68U & RT-AC68R to MerlinWRT 378.50, multiple nvram resets and restarts before and after the upgrade. Upgrade went fine, but as the final tweak to the config I decided to set the authentication to HTTPS only. After that, HTTPS://192.168.5.x gives nothing and HTTP://192.168.5.x gives the page sited by the OP. Swapping PCs/browsers and power cycling the routers don't help.

I did turn up SSH prior to changing the authentication settings... will dig around to see if there is a way to reset the auth type only via SSH.

andyhi, how are you entering the password? Copy and Paste? That may be messing you up.

How long is the password? Try typing one character less or more, at the beginning or the end, with the more being a space character.

I think everyone is overlooking the obvious (including me in my first reply):

The OP says he can't access the settings page (the GUI). Re-read the warning page he posted in his first message.....[Sound of palm hitting face].

The message tells you all you need to know: The IP address of the router/bridge/repeater/AP has changed.

So trying to enter the original IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.1) will no longer get you back into the GUI because that's not the IP address of the device.

You need to run the Asus "Discovery Utility" (see this link which is for the N66U, but the utility will work on any computer to discover any Asus router IP): or use some other wifi tool that will give you the name and the new IP address of the device you're trying to log into (there's an android app called F*ing which is great for this).

Once you have the new, correct IP, type it into your browser and you should be in.

The answer is right there in the original message. Doh....

I wasn't even getting prompted for the password since the change to https (only).

I fired up a Linux box and ran a nmap port scan... nothing was listening on 80 or 443 but other ports were responding including 8443.

The browsers on both windows PCs must have been caching the http response mentioned in the OP... even after attempting to flush the cache. (Konqueror browser on the Linux box confirmed... no response from the http or https calls on 80 & 443.)

However, I was able to get back in via https://IP:8443... so the web gui is now listening for https on 8443 instead of the standard 443.

Edit - I just noticed that the default port in the GUI for HTTPS is... 8443. Go figure. Oversight on my part when I disabled http.

Hope this helps anyone else in a similar situation.

Try https://192.168.1.1:8443, then https://192.168.1.1:443, then http://192.168.1.1.

If none of those work, cycle the routers power, wait a full 60 seconds and try all 3 again. (Close your browser during the power cycle.)

If that doesn't do it, the CFE might be in fail-safe update mode. I've had this happen a couple of times the past when resetting nvram via the reset button, but the power cycle will usually take it out.

Well, then, the only thing to do is reset the 68U so that the user name and password are both "admin".

Find the reset button on the back of the router (should be right next to the power switch). Hold it in for 30 seconds or so, watch as all the LED's go dark and then come back on. Then unplug the router for at least two minutes. Plug it back in again and reboot. Reboot your laptop as well and then give it another try.

Just out of curiosity, what OS are you running on your laptop, and what kind of wireless adapter is in the laptop?

tried, first and third did not work at all, the second url (the https one) opened up the AiCloud.

I'd like to mention that 192.168.1.1:8181 opens the Download Manager fine.

Assuming you've sufficiently cleared your browser's cache and/or tried from another device, the only other thing I can think of is to just do the NVRAM reset as mentioned. That should get the GUI responding again on http:// (port 80), but you will have to reconfigure from scratch.

Note - Personally I was having browser cache issues when troubleshooting my issue above and I've seen this on these routers in the past. (Which make you think the device is responding to http calls on port 80 when it isn't.)

ok, I tried following this guide as I had a mac with an ethernet port available yesterday.

I got the latest merlin build, powered off the router, held the reset button for about 5 seconds, while holding the reset button, powered on the router, continued holding the reset for another 10 sec until the power led started flashing.

I then the used the terminal to execute these commands

Code:
$ tftp
tftp> connect
(to) 192.168.1.1
tftp> binary
tftp> put RT-AC66U_3.0.0.4_266.trx
Sent 22765568 bytes in 76.5 seconds
tftp> quit

and everything looked fine. I got the Set xxx bytes in xxx seconds message and all.

I then waited about 5 minutes and rebooted the router, only to find that I still cannot access the gui, also the router had the same SSID with passwords...

I am certainly doing something wrong. If I can't get it to work from the mac, I will get a usb to ethernet adapter tomorrow from amazon and return it after fixing this :D

just leaving a quick update.

I managed to get the router reset. I used the nvram reset method and got a usb to ethernet cable to upload the firmware with the recovery tool from my windows laptop.

everything's fine now :D

Never mind (I didn't see your last post before I posted here, so I deleted my original message). Glad you got it working.

This has to-do with the wan redirection page and has been a long term issue when messing with http/https ports and settings. To fix it do the following;

Administration - System - Enable WAN down browser redirect notice > No

Does anyone know what this setting actually does? That stupid caching of that setting announcement page happens every time the router is upgraded or you perform a configuration operation that results in the reboot of the router. This has been happening before this newish option was available.

In fact, when I turn it off, I start getting all sorts of weird errors in the log.

If the WAN goes down, instead of displaying a "cannot connect to site xyz" in your browser you will get an error page generated by the router telling you that your WAN is down.

That's what I figured, but when that option is enabled, I don't get redirected as expected. As stated, when I turn that option off my logs to go crazy.
