I've been running merlin firmware in ac56u model which I got in norway, but currently using in India. So unfortunately warranty cannot be claimed now. The problem is USB port is not working and system log says, ov er current...

Code:

Aug 1 05:30:22 kernel: ohci_hcd 0000:00:0a.0: irq 111, io mem 0x18022000

Aug 1 05:30:22 kernel: hub 2-0:1.0: over-current change on port 1
Aug 1 05:30:22 kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp
Aug 1 05:30:22 kernel: hub 2-0:1.0: over-current change on port 2

Now I tried tomato shibby firmware and original asus firmware as well. Nothing seems to be helpful and as of now loaded latest merlin firmware.

Any help appreciated:)

Looks like your device is pulling too much power on the port - bad device perhaps?

I've no idea... Is that mean it's a hardware issue? It was working fine for several months and recently started giving this issue.

What device are you trying to connect?

Did you try with something basic, such as a USB thumbdrive?

Over current notice means either the device tries to draw too much current, or there is a short (make sure the connector isn't physically damaged - I've seen it happen with some PCs).

Yes, I was trying with normal thumb drive only... Tried with different thump drive and nothing is working and these drives are working fine in PC.

How to check is there a short? Should I open and see? BTW the log which I posted above is after boot without any usb drives connected. And if I connect any drive, no log or nothing... Basically it's not even detecting the thump drive. There's no physical damage to the device.

If there's no visual sign of damage on either of the two ports, then it must be something that failed internally in the controller. Not much you can do about it then.

Okay, thanks... Need to find out a way to run torrent client without usb drive. I hope it's possible.

The guides for installing torrent client is based on USB drives :( Is there any way to run torrent client without usb drive? I do have WD-My-Cloud NAS connected to the router. Is it possible to mount the NAS share as USB and install torrent client?

Run transmission (or other client) on the PC - better all around - less load on the router...

The torrent client itself needs a USB disk to be installed.

If your router is defective all you have to do is flash back original firmware and send it back to ASUS for a new one. This is not right.
Any flash drive or USB drive should work right of the bat.
you have a defective USB controller. They are very flaky and can easily be shorted and fail to work.
It happened to a friend of mine he plugged a USB powered HUB and blew the USB controller of the router.

@yorgi unfortunately I can't claim warranty as the router was bought in Norway and I'm currently in India.

Anyways thanks all for your inputs, I will just use as router with out USB devices:(
