Asus RT-AC68U wireless bridge not working AsusMerlin

All I did was switch the mode to "media bridge", gave it the IP that I had already reserved on my gateway (Netgear R7000), selected my 5 ghz network, and hit apply. Now somehow the Asus has a random IP address way out side the range of my gateway and not the IP that I gave it. The subnet mask is also different. If I plug in a laptop to the Asus I cannot access it in any way wired or wireless, and no gateway is listed on the laptop.
What am I missing?
