I have a 3tb external hdd and is working better with this new beta firmware than 23b...

EDIT: I noticed that there is indeed a dead modprobe process on my router as well now, I just didn't experience any WAN issue probably because my lease hasn't expired yet. It's odd since running modprobe -r from the shell immediately returns with a proper error message. Could be a compatibility issue introduced with the new busybox.

The WAN connection is stable with exp firmware (patchedbb2).

One more notice. When I configure the ethernet port of my cisco SLM2008 switch for 100 full duplex (and it reports full duplex), your firmware reports that port has 100 half duplex.

Excellent :) That only leaves one major issue with 3G USB devices, awaiting test results on that front.

One more notice. When I configure the ethernet port of my cisco SLM2008 switch for 100 full duplex (and it reports full duplex), your firmware reports that port has 100 half duplex.

That probably means it's indeed configured at half duplex. Bad things tend to happen if you have one device set to forced duplex while the other side is set to auto. The device on auto tries to talk to the other device, and since it's not in auto, it never gets an answer, and will default to half-duplex. Try setting the duplex to auto on your Cisco if it allows you.

Just to confirm this isn't a display bug, could you run the following command in telnet/ssh?

Code:
robocfg show

Post back the result (feel free to remove the MACs).

OK, I checked. It is not a display bug. For some reason the router chooses half duplex mode at 10 and 100Mbit, even when the cisco switch was configured for full duplex.

Hi All, i dont know if it happen in the new beta only, i got PPTP VPN disconnection randomly,
i google the message, someone said it caused by the VPN boardcast, i checked and it disable by default.
i dont know why it happen.

3TB problems

tnx for the great work!!!!

Having trouble since 24beta with my beloved 3tb seagate expansion disk.

(1) disk spinning down does not work (same as rev 23). presumably a firmware issue with the seagate needs different parameters).

(2) usb disk is mounting but problems writing on it via ftp:

Jan 28 13:30:54 kernel: sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk
Jan 28 13:30:54 kernel: sd 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 0
Jan 28 13:30:54 kernel: EXT3-fs: Unrecognized mount option "umask=0000" or missing value
Jan 28 13:30:54 hotplug[1003]: USB /dev/sdb1(ext3) failed to mount at the first try!
Jan 28 13:30:55 kernel: kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
Jan 28 13:30:55 kernel: EXT3-fs warning: maximal mount count reached, running e2fsck is recommended
Jan 28 13:30:55 kernel: EXT3 FS on sdb1, internal journal
Jan 28 13:30:55 kernel: EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
Jan 28 13:30:55 hotplug[1003]: USB ext3 fs at /dev/sdb1 mounted on /tmp/mnt/sdb1
Jan 28 13:30:55 notify_rc : restart_nasapps
Jan 28 13:30:56 FTP Server: daemon is stoped
Jan 28 13:30:56 Samba Server: smb daemon is stoped
Jan 28 13:30:56 Samba Server: daemon is started
Jan 28 13:30:56 FTP server: daemon is started

I can read on disk but not write (for some reasons can write via AiCloud, but very slow).

No problems also with the disk on an external linux system.

The option has been renamed to Samba Support in recent firmware versions - disable that.

1) Disk-specific issue, nothing I can do about it
2) Check your filesystem permissions.

Yes, I looked at my router log this morning at about 10AM, and the time showing there was 2AM. I checked the timezone to be sure that I'd changed it, and the timezone is correct. It isn't exactly 8 hours off, etiher, so it isn't just displaying GMT. This has always worked, so I was surprised to see that.

Maybe everyone else is already doing this, or I'm one of the few with the problem, but I used this article:

http://myfreebsd.homeunix.net/freebsd/ntp_servers.html

to pick a specific secondary ntp server close to me, and this is working fine. I'd rather be using the pool, since it seems more reliable to have multiple fallback servers, but a specific ntp server is fine for the moment. Nice to have the correct date and time in the log again.

Works fine for me as well under IE10.

Try a different browser just to see if the issue is limited to your IE setup. You can also try opening the error console (Press F12, then go to the Console tab) to see if there is any specific error. Note that there will be many warnings, some of the webui isn't very IE-friendly.

I face this issue with both my home and work laptop. I have Windows7 64 and 32, in Dutch and English with IE9.

Following issue I found in the console, which I looked up on microsoft website:

Code: SEC7115

Message: ":visited and :link styles can only differ by color. Some styles were not applied to :visited."

Description: More than one attribute, such as font or size, were changed by using the visited and link styles.

Suggested fix: Change only the color attribute.

This is a harmless warning, and wouldn't be causing your issue. The webui returns a bunch of these all over the place.

Was it working at all under 23b?

Can you give me the brand and model of your external hard disk, so I can validate wether it's using 4Kb sectors or not?

On related news, I just received a 3TB Caviar Green at work, which will allow me to do my own troubleshooting regarding this issue.

OK, I checked. It is not a display bug. For some reason the router chooses half duplex mode at 10 and 100Mbit, even when the cisco switch was configured for full duplex.

Yeah, that's normal. Auto configure only works properly if BOTH sides are using it. In your case, the router is in auto while the Cisco is on manual, therefore causing issues.

Look at it on the bright side - this new feature probably let you discover a network problem you didn't even know you had until now :)

Run windows update and I've removed cache and cookies. First time it shows the full screen, next times only half screen... Any ideas where I should look at?

It should give you additional error messages in the console if it really has trouble loading the whole page.

Wap & dhcp

I have Zyxel WAP3205 running their latest firmware 1.00(BFR.7)C0. After I upgraded to 266.24b, it would no longer obtain the static assigned DHCP address. I just saw the DHCP offer repeating in the system log.

I ended up having to backrev to 266.23 where it's working again.

I didn't save the system log so I'll have to reload the beta. Are there any relevant logs from the router that would be helpful?

512 / 4K sector size

@Merlin,

again thanks for your last answer; there was indeed an issue with the file system permission.

Concerning your question regarding 512b / 4K sector size I can say, that my Seagate Expansion Desk 3TB USB 3.0 / ext3 was working under 23b also fine and has a 4096 sector size.

--------------------
fdisk -l

Note: sector size is 4096 (not 512)

Disk /dev/sdb: 3000.5 GB, 3000592977920 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 5700 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 4096 = 65802240 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 45600 2930255748 83 Linux
---------------------

Hope this info helps.

tnx

Thanks for the feedback. At this point I am pretty much given up on this. Linux itself has trouble working with some USB enclosures when used with an Advanced Format disk. My Vantec NexStar CX won't even work on my Ubuntu HTPC, which means it's not just a bug with the Asus firmware.

So the bottom line is, some 3 TB HDDs will work fine on the router. Some won't work on the router, but will work on a regular Linux system (due to the newer kernel). And some won't work at all under any Linux system.

This means that even if I were to patch the firmware to properly handle some of these (the second case), there would always be USB enclosures that would fail to work on the router, no matter what I tried. In that case, rather than have a still unreliable 3 TB support on the firmware, I will most likely simply give up, since it's simply impossible to guarantee that ANY 3TB would work on the router. It will be up to Asus (or its users) to build a "known compatible" list of 3TB devices.

I can confirm that my Hitachi 3 TB inside a Vantec NexStar CX works (since it emulates 512 bytes sectors).

I can confirm that a WD Caviar Green 3 TB inside a Vantec NexStar CX does NOT work, as this enclosure does not properly report the fact that the drive uses 4 KB sectors, which will confuse any Linux kernel.

@Merlin,

tnx again for the clarification; awful that it is that complicated and that there is no consistent standard between the devices.

I appreciate your idea to publish a list of working and not compatible Disks.

Would be great to list if the Disk is working in general and also if the sleeping mode (stop spinning) is supported and under which format / file system the disk is working.

Maybe we can start to collect the information within this forum.

tnx

It should give you additional error messages in the console if it really has trouble loading the whole page.

Found following error message consol:

Error: script5007 unable to get value of the property 'parentnode': object is null or undefined
svg.js, line 1 character 21336

This refers to "svgweb.removeChild(removeMe,removeMe.parentNode)"

Attached screen shot (with Dutch error message, but you find English translation above :))
