Anybody know if this router still works as a standard router without the cloud integration?

"According to an email from Sezen Uysal, founder and CEO of Roqos, customers are provided with “login access to the unit with ‘sudo’ capabilities, so that an advanced user can use the systems as standard router,” and add new open source software."
Just noticed post #16 answers my question , Sounds like an awesome router.

Thanks for posting that info sfx2000. :)

That quote doesn't seem to answer your question as you seem you want it to be answered as though?

Are you an advanced user? Can you build a firmware that you can flash to that hardware to keep it usable, standalone?

If the possibility is there, sure, others with those capabilities will do so. Will it be worth it for the nominal, current, $223 asking price? We have no way of predicting that today.

Nor do we know if Roqos won't ask for their hardware back after your first years' 'commitment' to their cloud service either.

From their WWW site... So one year commitment on the "service" @ 204, plus the 19 - then one gets to keep it...

While Roqos is working hard around the clock to protect your home, it provides affordable Roqos service at $17/month with 12-month paid service commitment. In addition, with a $19 hardware fee, Roqos Core is yours to keep.

This is exactly why they would work hard to not have it work without their $17/month service 'commitment' fees. Is the hardware so cheap that a portion of the $17 monthly, plus $19 one time charge, makes it 'throwaway' for them?

I'm not sure of the business case around Roqos - but some of the principals/founders, they were one of my vendor teams, and these are good guys, and pretty damn smart - they get this stuff at a carrier grade level. I doubt they would even start something like this unless they knew what they were planning to do... every startup has risks, no doubt, but risks can be managed, and this is the kind of stuff they know - it's a good local platform, and they know how to scale the backend.

Worst case - one has sudo, and with sudo, one has root... and the risk here is pretty small...

Well, the risk is small if you know what to do with sudo and root. :)

For $223, that is a pretty big risk for most to take for a single year of service when an RT-AC68U or better (sales) could be working well (enough) for you well past 2021. ;)

Does the router stop working if you don't continue the subscription after 12months?

After 12 month of commitment if the user terminates the Roqos service, the Roqos Core router continues working with all the functionality. However, Roqos Core will not get parental control and cybersecurity signatures, and Roqos app will not be able to manage the Roqos Core. But, console and ssh login are available with sudo access, users can have the complete control of the software and the hardware they 100% own.

In detail, Roqos service which comes with a Roqos Core Wi-Fi router provides the following:
  • Automatic cybersecurity signature updates for recent malware, attacks, etc.
  • Automatic parental control signature updates for new inappropriate web sites
  • Automatic software updates
  • Instant in-app and email notifications of events, alerts, etc.
  • Remote access and control by smartphone app
  • Hardware warranty during active service
  • Advanced shipment of defective hardware
  • No additional fee for any new service features
  • Customer support via support site, email or phone
FAQ and list of features are here: https://roqos.com/features_faq.html.

Just as an FYI...

VPN and DDNS updates...

http://linuxgizmos.com/cloud-enabled-wifi-router-adds-vpn-and-dynamic-dns/

This is still one of the more interesting devices in the SOHO market I've seen in quite some time...

Roqos has upgraded its Linux-based “Roqos Core” dual-band WiFi-ac router with a v.16 upgrade that adds VPN connections and Dynamic DNS.

The Debian Linux driven Roqos Core router is now available with a v.1.6 upgrade that adds Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Dynamic DNS features. With the VPN feature, users can make a secure VPN connection from anywhere in the world, says Virginia based Roqos.

The Roqos VPN feature supports Android devices with a new Android app. iOS users can initially use OpenVPNConnect based on the open source OpenVPN technology, but this will be replaced later this year with a more customized iOS app. Desktop and laptop users running Linux, Windows, or Mac can use the open source OpenConnect app.
