New Around Here
Hi, apologies if this has been discussed before; I tried a few searches and couldn't find anything in the forums.

I'm looking for some proxy server software in order to provide customisable content filtering (to protect two young children from seeing things they shouldn't) and http caching (to help speed up our network).

Does anybody have any recommendations? We have a HP microserver running windows 8.

Would something like OpenDNS content filtering work for you?
Not really sure about the http cache unless you are willing to go full on with squid and squidguard.

Cheers Cloud - I'm trying to get OpenDNS to work at the moment, but the modem/router we have is pretty much locked down by our ISP (UK, Sky) and I can't change the DNS addresses on it.

I looked at Squid; any idea how good it is on Windows? Is there a GUI for it?

If you are trying to do this all transparently and are completely unable to change the modem/firewall, you are going to have to set up the hardware as following:

Local LAN --->
Switch --->
Port 1 content filter
|
Something to force content filtering be it Squid, Untangle or another router in-line double Natting.
|
Port 2 content filter --->
Modem/Router --->
Internet

Squid is a mix of text files, gui and command line on windows.
You will have to buy a second network card as well to make that work.

To get a feel for the setup just watch some videos on youtube
