D7800 vs R7800 - Only different 1.4ghz vs 1.7 ghz processor?

I have a chance to pickup a D7800 at a decent price because it's a demo unit with pre-production firmware (hoping I can upgrade still to the latest).

From my research it looks like the only difference between the D7800 and R7800 (besides having a DSL modem which I wont use at all) is it has a dual core 1.4 ghz processor vs the 1.7 ghz in the R7800

Will I notice a difference in throughput on SU-MIMO devices because of this? How about USB 3.0 / eSata storage throughput?

Does the D7800 have full 160mhz support like the R7800? I cant seem to find it on netgears page.

Seems they even have the same amount of RAM which is nice

The modem makes the D7800 and the R7800 two very different products.

If you have no use for the DSL modem that is built in, buy something else instead.
 
Like I said in my above post, the reason I am considering it is because it is really affordable. $120 for a D7800 is a lot cheaper than I can get ANYTHING else equivalent for. It should work just fine as an AP.
 
Looks like a good deal to me for $180. Is it returnable if it doesn't work out? If so, I'd jump on that just to try it out.
 
You know the saying that just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean you should? ;)

Go ahead if affordable is your number one goal. If you need a router though, the price is what the price is.
 
The R7800 uses the latest QCA9984 SoC the D7800 uses a QCA9980 the same as the R7500v2. It also uses a different CPU, the R7800 uses a IPQ8065 the D7800 uses the IPQ8064. The D7800 is more like a R7500v2 with a modem, the R7800 is a bit of a different beast with the latest SoC 's from Qualcomm.

Router performs amazingly. Very fast. It seems like the D7800 is a bit in between he R7500 v2 and the R7800. It has the dual core slower 1.4 ghz CPU from the R7500v2, but a faster 4x4 2.4 ghz radio (not that anyone probably even has 4x4 2.4ghz devices...)

Regardless it was a deal I could not afford to passup even if I'll never be using the DSL portion.

The radio is the same as the R7500v2 the D7800 use a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9980, the R7800 uses a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9984. Still its a great deal. :)
 
Yes its 600Mbps but it still uses the same wifi radio chip as the R7500v2 oddly enough. Not that you will see those speeds unless you probably have another D7800 :)
 
You will not be able to use any third party firmware with D7800. This is not a problem if you plan to keep the modem/router up to its EOL. But if you want to keep longer than ... no more fixes or official firmwares and you will be left alone.
 
Who cares? It was cheap. If something comes up in the future that would cause this router to become useless because it wasn't receiving firmware updates anymore, he could just buy another router.
 
Another difference is the R7800's newer WiFi chip (QCA9984) supports 2 2x2 MU devices concurrently while the D7800 (QCA9980) can only do 1 2x2 and 1 1x1 device concurrently. Both still support a max of 3 MU devices concurrently if using just 1x1 devices.

Not a lot of MU clients out there at the moment - so basically MU is a check-box feature...
