Hello all,
I'm a photographer tired of the 8+ hard drives with different backups on them in two different locations.

Looking at getting two NAS's to do off site replication both ways.

I picked up a Synology DS414j with 4 X 3TB WD RED drives.

However the throughput I'm getting isn't that great. 36MB/s up, and the CPU is hitting 90+%.
I was hoping for more like 90-100MB/s am I asking too much?
I'm getting 75-80 MB/sec machine to machine

The DS414j would be the off site backup and I would be getting the 5 or 8 bay unit for work/home.
Would the bigger units be faster?

System:
MacPro
Yosemite
Asus RT-AC66U Router trendnet gig switch

thank you
mdr

You need a NAS with a better platform and specifically a better cpu than what the budget DS414j offers.

A QNAP TS-470 PRO or better.

@L&D,
Which Synology would be comparable, the 1513+ or 1813+?

I already have the 414j and would use it as a dumb offsite backup.

Thanks for your reply.

Thanks for the info.
I'm not too concerned about the speed between onsite and offsite NAS. More the speed of the onsite where the bulk of the backup and usage would be.

Both of those are the older Atom based platforms. I would guess in the same league as what you currently have.

What you need to be looking at is an i3 platform, an Intel BayTrail platform coupled with the capability of 4gb ram or more.

Or maybe the latest Rangeley platform, like the following link shows.
