Hehe - free speech within reason - the freedom to swing a fist stops at the end of one's nose...

Isn't there a park over in the UK where there is a specific place that folks can rant about anything they want, and they're totally protected? I seem to recall that - and it was a guarantee from some royal long time back...

That area is actually heavily monitored with mobile phone signal repeaters so that they can spy on you. I've seen protests all over the place but never any violent ones where i am.

Anyways - on a public forum - Xenforo (and others) do have a means where a user can be "encouraged" in a direction - not quite the banhammer, but putting them into a box that makes things, erm, interesting...

There is a comment and perhaps a subtle warning earlier in this thread that a limit is being pushed...

Been there - going off spectacularly on a potential vendor/sponsor (and there, it wasn't the base message, but how it was delivered) and on another forum member (again, it was how the message was delivered, not the message itself), that landed me in the penalty box for a bit... it's not the matter whether I was right or wrong, but how it was communicated that landed me there - it wasn't the info, but the candor in how it was delivered.

We all need to have a bit of civility perhaps... not unique to here - it's an ongoing discussion at the present over in the linux kernel development forums as some folks are who they are, but not aware than some have thin skins, and not understanding the reasons why...

The term I was looking for was "Speakers's Corner" - and yes, they do monitor things, they're also pretty tolerant compared to other spaces - but it's a very small space... being outside of the UK, we're not attuned to all the specifics there...

And for what it's work - here's a free speech zone here in America...

I am a fan of Open Firmware, but what if the shoe was on the other foot? What if the FCC, run by a more conservative group, required manufacturers to do something you were not a fan of, in exchange for a lesser penalty? I wish an open firmware option was explicitly required by FCC rules, and that was the basis for getting TP-Link to allow other firmware.

Its true in the UK there may be protest zones but free speech is something you wont find unrestricted anywhere. The issue with allowing free speech is that you also have to deal with online behaviour as people act differently online such as with the case of cyber bullying, youtuber suicides, people spreading lies that can be harmful, etc. People seem to lack common sense and open mindedness. I've debunked so many false claims, people seem to love to twist words and not show the whole truth

At the very least the authorities are clever enough to differentiate between free speech and hate speech as with the case of britian first as they were spreading hate speech instead. Infact even more cops turned up to their rallies than participants. The BBC debunked them and while you may call them biased they provided some good facts, behind the scenes and interviewed all involved.

So while you can say what you like in the UK you can get arrested for saying stuff. Or get court orders for things. An example: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-york-north-yorkshire-35385227

Ive seen quite a number of protests and its very interesting in the UK how peaceful things are (excluding those hate groups and fakers). The only thing i would say the UK needs is less greed and less silly shenanigans like trying to block porn outright.
