I recently got me a RT-AC87U to replace my current modem-router (Deutsche Telekom Speedport W 921V) for better WiFi performance. For the past 3 days I tried to set it up but I found out that it seems to work only in one scenario:
Starting from this: Speedport set up completely for ADSL, VoIP (let's ignore this, I don't need it anyway), WiFi.
- Cleanly disconnect the internet with WebGUI Button
- Delete access configuration for internet
- Check other devices are allowed to establish their connection through this device (labeled as Modem Mode)
Plugging in the ASUS into the now modem 921V, enter PPPoE Access data and alas it works.
So, what's the problem you ask? Well if this will run forever like this, no problems, but if anything changes...
- Restart AC87U, cannot establish connection "Timeout waiting for PADO packets"
- Restart Modem, same
Setting up the speedport again with internet access data, delete them and connect via the ASUS, works again but is a pain in the butt.
What I noticed _once_! was that after I re-setup the Speedport router, it said it cannot connect because there is already a connection.
I already did disconnect everything multiple times and waited up to 15 minutes, then re-powered all but it still did not work.

Jan 1 00:01:00 pppd[637]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
I am kinda at a loss here as I just cannot get which devails fails me here, if the Speedport does not work correctly in modem mode or the ASUS not working correctly.
It does not matter actually what I configure on the ASUS, if I leave it at stock settings and just enter PPPoE access data or configure WIFI or anything.
Speedport W 921V Firmware: had 1.36 upgraded itself now to 1.37
ASUS RT-AC87U: had unknown firmware, had asked me to upgrade to 3.0.0.4.378_4608
Any help or clues are appreciated.
Edit 03/31/15 I just compiled and flashed merlin 378.52 beta1 and it problem is fixed now. I can reboot and it just works. Thanks very much RMerlin!
