I have mine setup so all my own personal devices (mostly Apple) use a secure dns profile on the device, the rest go through the ctrld proxy on the router which handles the guest wifi as well. You can set the client to send different subnets to their own resolvers on controld.

They (ControlD) have a dns client compatible with Merlin, works reasonably well. A new beta is coming perhaps next week with more features.

Opportunistic mode works so I don't know what has changed, always used to run strict mode.

I can recommend DietPi, easy setup of either Pi-Hole or Adguard and Unbound as well. Works on different hardware and even VMs.
