    Looking to ditch FreeNAS

Ever since 11.2, it seems like things have gotten more difficult (though I do love the new GUI). I ended up going to unRAID. but, I may have to check this out too.

Looking for a Cheap Cable Tester

I’ve had really good luck with this one from Klein. www.amazon.com/Telephone-Remotes-Klein-Tools-VDV501-823/dp/B00M2DDO0Q/ref=sr_1_4?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1531612120&sr=1-4&keywords=Klein+cable+tester&dpID=51cuXVp0oiL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Looking for good online source for eia/tia certified CAT6/7 cabling

I’ve had success with Cable Matters bulk rolls of Cat6A shielded. The white paired cables aren’t marked with the associated pairs color stripe, but each twisted pair is in their own shielding foil, so it’s not too difficult to tell which line is which. I’ve gone through two bulk rolls of it so...

Replacing the guts of my pfSense appliance

I just built a 1U pfSense box using a Supermicro A1SRM 2858 motherboard that I picked up used off of evilbay. Probably a little overkill with 8 cores and 16Gb of RAM. But, it's been working flawlessly.

    Slow File Transfer Speed?

You're right. I was thinking it was something with the NAS, but I found a cable that I overlooked. Thought I got them all.

    Slow File Transfer Speed?

I'm in the process of setting up my Plex Media Server which is a dedicated FreeNAS machine on my home network. I've been ripping DVDs/Blurays on my desktop and then transferring them over to my server. I've been ripping the movies in 4K which results in file sizes around 50GB for each movie...

Options to run ethernet cable from wall to wall mounted rack

Don't think that would work too well. The closet being used is on the first level, so the only place the cables would go if they went to the ceiling would be into the floor above, so it has to be in the common wall that is shared by the first and second floors if I want to get the cables up to...

Options to run ethernet cable from wall to wall mounted rack

7 foot might be a bit overkill. I was thinking more along the lines of a wall hung 12U - 18U.

Options to run ethernet cable from wall to wall mounted rack

It isn't susceptible to flooding at all, but good call. I was more thinking about getting the cable from the wall to the rack. I'd rather not just cut a circle in the wall. Ideally, the inside of the wall will be sealed off from the closet somehow. I figure I'll have to insulate the...

Options to run ethernet cable from wall to wall mounted rack

We're about to buy a house that is several decades old. There is a closet in the office in the middle of the house that is perfect for a server room with a rack mounted to the wall. I'm planning on wiring the house, two stories with cat6 or cat6a wire. Said office closet is on the bottom floor...

Looking for a switch and access point...need suggestions

Two at least. Maybe three or four just to be safe (if I wanted to add a Roku or something later) Why would you spend the money on a full router and not just use an access point? More functionality?

Looking for a switch and access point...need suggestions

I have a Netgear Nighthawk R8000 on the downstairs level of my house. I want to run some ethernet cable to my upstairs, one room in particular that has an xbox one and a TV. It's kind of on the other side of my house (and on a different level) where my wifi signal is weak, so I was thinking on...

Same issue here (5GHz, iPad Air 2 using chrome) no matter what the bandwidth setting is on.

One Large Switch VS Multiple Smaller Switches for Home Network

I was just using the picture to help explain what I was talking about (not that I have that many devices either way). But, a couple rooms with TVs and associated devices, an office with computer, printer, etc, 8 or so exterior security cameras (was thinking a separate POE switch for them)...

One Large Switch VS Multiple Smaller Switches for Home Network

I'm in the planning phase of setting up a home network and I'm looking for opinions. I can use a large multiport switch and run multiple cat 6 cables to each room for the devices used or run one line between the router location and the room using two switches. The advantage to using one...
