why is ASUS RT-AX86u recommended over RT-AX88u?

GT-AX6000 would be pushing what I wanted to spend. I got the RT-AX86U.

why is ASUS RT-AX86u recommended over RT-AX88u?

Why is ASUS RT-AX86u recommended over RT-AX88u? While I can add a switch, just having 8 ports on a single router seems nice and the price difference isn't that big.

    Which NAS?

This is the summary of 4 bay QNAP vs Synology NAS hardware from my shopping experience in December (reposted from this thread). The comparison of 2 bay NAS is less equivalent, as some of Synology's 2 bay NAS have fewer USB-3 ports and just a single Ethernet port. I didn't consider HDMI ports. I...

    First NAS: QNAP TS-451+ or...?

How is the ts451+ working for you?

    First NAS: QNAP TS-451+ or...?

Sounds like a good choice. There seem to be a number of plusses to both vendors. As for virtual machines: I have seen instructions for installing virtualbox on Synology DSM. You can put windows on that, but the maximum 8GB RAM (if you perform an anouthrized upgrade on your DS416Play), would...

Is Cloud Station Drive data sent encrypted?

It seems from this Synology blog post, that at least it can be as of DSM 5.1. https://blog.synology.com/?p=2801

Is Cloud Station Drive data sent encrypted?

Does Cloud Station Drive encrypt data before sending it? If so, what encryption do they use? More specifically, is data synced with Cloud Station Drive over the internet reasonably secure during transmission?

Copying files/directories from one Synology Disk Station to another, why so difficult?!

Isn't this what Cloud ShareSync is for? Does Cloud ShareSync not work very well? https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/help/CloudStationClient/DScloudclient Sneaker net is probably the fastest way to do it, if you only need to copy a very large folder once.

    First NAS: QNAP TS-451+ or...?

For the reasons in my last post, I would not do anything more than RAID 1. I have had some bad experiences and just generally found it to be a PITA. Going with separate logical drives makes it easier to pull drives to backup or transfer large amounts of data (which is what I will be doing before...

    First NAS: QNAP TS-451+ or...?

Thanks for catching the typo. It's fixed now. I probably lean towards Synology because I already have a little experience with them. My friend in IT recommended QNAP, but he doesn't have any experience with Synology. The hardest part in switching is that you are walking from the known to the...

    First NAS: QNAP TS-451+ or...?

For a NAS, I think the most important differences are AES-NI seems to make a difference in performance when using encryption. The NAS with N-series chips are better at transcoding video. Important for people that are using Smart TV's and stuff like that. Not important for pretty much anyone...

    First NAS: QNAP TS-451+ or...?

TS-451+ doesn't have AES-NI. TS-451A and DS416Play do. That only has an impact if you use encryption, which depending on the circumstances, seems like it can be significant. From what I can tell, it is mostly important if you need to send/receive encrypted or if you need to encrypt the data...

    First NAS: QNAP TS-451+ or...?

Hardware wise, the DS416play is pretty similar to TS451A, except it doesn't have HDMI ports, so you can't use it as a stand alone computer and it has only 1 GB of RAM*. On the other hand DS416play uses the BTRFS disk format, which has a number of advantages. *I believe you can upgrade the...

Replacement for DS211J? Main problem is that DS211J is too slow.

I think I decided to focus on units with AES-NI support, as it seems like it makes a pretty big difference when encryption is enabled (from what few benchmarks I have found.) Looking at the available Intel powered models with AES-NI support... For Synology 2 bay DS216+ and DS216+II are dual...
