Sorry, brain glitch. I didn't realize I could just copy the IP #s. I got confused when I hit the link on the left of the page for MacOS, and read "The easiest way to install CleanBrowsing on your MacOS device is to use our App." But they were talking about the DNS in the Mac's networking...
Cool! I will do this now. Is there anything else I need to do for that to work?
My DNS servers are currently set to Nord's. Should I set them back to Spectrum's, or is there a better choice? Or does it not matter whose I use, if I have enabled DNS-over-TLS?
I took a quick look at...
Well, I just sent an email to Nord, requesting a refund for my one-year subscription. (I am still within the 30-day trial period.)
I guess I am convinced I am better off without a VPN. I am certainly quite convinced I am better off without NordVPN, with their appalling customer service.
So...
@Tech9, you and @L&LD certainly seem strongly convinced that a VPN is worthless. And I have not enjoyed tinkering with it, so I am inclined to drop it. (Although I may still read https://defensivecomputingchecklist.com/vpn.php. I did read https://gist.github.com/joepie91/5a9909939e6ce7d09e29...
:( So that's not good enough for surfing? streaming netflix? zoom?
And will OpenVPN still be used if I were to use the Nord app (or some other VPN's app), without applying it to the router?
Ok, I will. After I get some fresh air.
Meanwhile, as you said, family members are complaining - internet radio disconnecting every 5 min! So I turned the Service state to OFF on the VPN Client > OpenVPN Client Settings page. I guess later I should reset the WAN > DNS servers to Spectrum's...
Thank you for the warning. I'm the one in my family who is suffering the most here, because I'm the one struggling to set it up!
I am going to read thru this page: https://defensivecomputingchecklist.com/vpn.php. (But it's a long page!) And then, maybe this...
I am not going to freak about about controlling all data leaks. But yes, I would like to keep that info down to a trickle. And I really resent companies that are selling my data EVEN THO I am a paid customer. If they want more $ from me, they should offer a more expensive tier that does not...
@L&LD: So are you saying a VPN is worthless? Would Mullvad or Proton offer better privacy, in terms of them being less likely to share my info?
If I am home on my own wifi, using Brave or Firefox as my browser, does going thru a VPN help with privacy at all?
@Tech9 - I can understand why...
If commercial VPN providers are not trustworthy, and if I can't use the VPN to keep companies from tracking me, then maybe I shouldn't bother trying to use a VPN. (I could still use a VPN app on mobile devices, when traveling.)
I will be offline for about an hour or so... back soon.
Privacy - prevent my ISP from gathering info about what websites we visit. Prevent websites/companies from tracking us all over the internet, gathering info into a comprehensive profile.
I don't know what Quad9 is, but for privacy reasons, I try to avoid Google when possible. Are there other...
