    looks promising except my new laptop doesn't have an RJ45 (aka Ethernet) port - (Ethernet is a protocol, not a hardware spec - and I am old enough to remember yellow cable standing wave cables) luckily i still have the (antique 2009!!!) windows 10 laptop without battery and with a broken wifi card!

    Yes, you need a connect gen1 or another speaker which cannot have been updated to s2 as it is not supported. Several connect gen1 on sale on ebay.

    If it formated EXFAT it will not load on xt8. Use ntfs or, if possible at all for your drive, fat32. Check out which formats ard accepted by xt8 here https://event.asus.com/2009/networks/disksupport/
