    I made the switch and it is a noticeable improvement. Application response times are much "snappier" now and I can have uidivstats running with no performance/stability issues. Temperatures are a tiny bit lower (with more things running). Thanks for your advice!

    I guess it could be your suggestion that OpenVPN was trying to resolve the (external) hostname before the DNS was available. A race condition like that could explain why it suddenly wasn't working. (There was no port specified, and there were no problems resolving the hostname before upgrading...
