Are UBNT Switches a good choice? 8 port POE

I just installed some UBNT AP's late last year. I too have been happy with the performance. My main problem is there seem to be a firmware upgrade almost weekly and have to read through all the forum posts to see if I want to install. I added the UBNT 8 port 60w as well and it has been...

Safely installing external poe cam on outside of home

Hi All, I would like to install a poe cam (Ring Stick up Cam) on the outside of my home and want to make sure I do this correctly. I plan on using a Cat 6 utp patch cable from the camera through PVC conduit inside to my basement and immediately connect to a Ubiquity ethernet surge protector...

    Router as DNS server

On my home network which is behind a simple Netgear router, ipconfig shows my router as the dns server. Question, does my router simply pass the DNS requests along to the ISP's DNS server or does it maintain a cache of some sort. Thanks Bob

    Name resolution LAN

"nbstat -a" followed by the machine name worked! Too bad MS does not have a utility that can simply identify this for you. As an experiment I turned over NetBIOS over TCP-IP and Net View went dark as expected and I could not find machines by name. Interestingly, the windows 8 machines...

    Name resolution LAN

Net view still works but it lists all the machines in the workgroup. One of them, (which happens to be the NAS) has it's name repeated under the remark column. Perhaps that indicates the master browser? Bob

    Name resolution LAN

I will look, I am using a ReadyNAS. Any idea how to tell what machine is the current master browser with Windows 8? So if you have 2 workgroups on the same sub net you will a master browser for each? Thanks Bob

    Name resolution LAN

Ok thanks I will look up LLDP, some general questions 1) My understanding is one of the machines on the LAN will become the master browser and resolve the name to IP? Is that correct? 2) Is there 1 Master browser per subnet or is it one master browser per workgroup? 3) Not that I need...

    Name resolution LAN

Hi: We are downsizing our office network from AD to a workgroup setting with a NAS for storage. We have 10 users using windows 8 and 7. The migration to the NAS went smooth with computers being removed from the domain and connected to NAS. Question, when I shut the domain servers down will...

How To Buy a Wireless Router: 2014 Edition

My house is rural so I have been using an inexpensive Netgear N-150. It's set to auto but always seems to be on channel 6. I have never had a problem, great range, no reboots and two concurrent users can stream Netflix. I am not going to replace until I find a reason. Note, I actually use...

How To Buy a Wireless Router: 2014 Edition

I must be missing something. I am thinking what we need to say is; 1, 6 and 11 are good choices if you need to place "three" Wi-Fi routers in close proximity. That way you will avoid overlap/noise. If you only have one Wi-Fi router, take your pick of any of the 11 (US based) channels. Does...

How To Buy a Wireless Router: 2014 Edition

Interesting, but if you only have 1 Wireless router in your home (excluding neighbors in this example) any of the 11 channels would be as good as another? -Bob

How To Buy a Wireless Router: 2014 Edition

Hi: "The 2.4 GHz band has 11 channels (in the U.S.), each of which is 20 MHz wide. If you do the math (or look at Figure1) you'll see that only three of them (Channels 1, 6 and 11) don't overlap. Channel overlap is bad, because it's another form of interference, which reduces your wireless...

    Backup for 2K3 file server.

Update I ended up purchasing a WD 1TB USB drive. I really don't need the NAS if I am only going to backup the server. So far 2nd copy works fine on 2003. The only catch was to disable USB booting on the server. I also reformated the WD drive with NTFS. Bob

    Backup for 2K3 file server.

Hello All: I would like a low cost but reliable NAS for secondary network backup of my file server. I am running AD server 2003. Basically I would like to run something like 2nd copy on the server to backup main files to the NAS. 1 TB should be all that I need. Will something like...
