Yikes! No quarantine or logs to tell you what files were impacted / deleted? asd simply goes in and deletes files it doesn't like? That is the exact definition of malware!

Do you have INIT consuming 50% CPU trying to restart the asd process (as described in post #44)?

To be honest: The only reason I upgraded was to get rid of the blinky-"!" saying there was a new version available. I didn't have a particular security hole I was trying to patch or anything. So Rolling back is my personal preferred solution. It's easier, only needs to be done once, and survives...

I disagree. "Complaining" about this problem has yielded not 1 but 2 good work-arounds. (And possibly more will follow). Users who experience the same issue can find this thread via Google (as I did) and quickly confirm, "Yes, that's what's happening to me ... " and have solutions provided.

My point is: Reporting abnormal behavior of a non-ASUS firmware (e.g. Merlin) to ASUS is a non-starter.

"ASUS customer support, how can I help you?" "Yes, my router is scanning my HDD non-stop since a firmware upgrade..." "What version are you running sir?" "Merlin 386.9" " 'Merlin'? So you're not running stock ASUS firmware?" "Well, no, but ..." <click>

Update: 12 hours post roll-back, and my HDD is idle as expected...for me: rolling back to Merlin 386.7_2 is the "fix" for now.

He said that back in 2021 ... so asd has been in the Merlin product for years ... (in fact, asd shows in my "top" command presently) ... but the scanning of a mounded drive non-stop is something that only started in the latest 386.9 release.

I'm not sure it's an ASUS issue ... latest firmware on the ASUS site is dated July 22 ... I'm running Merlin firmware, and the 386.7_2 release was in July, and the 386.9 (which has this drive scanning "feature") was January 23.

Rolled back to 386.7_2; so far, silence! HDD spins down as it used to, and idles unless accessed by a computer on the network. the "asd" process is running, but no /usr/bin/find process grinding away ... I'll report back in a day in case it takes some time for that process to start; but so-far...

I've had the same issue ... my USB2 connected hard disk has been spinning / seeking non-stop since the latest firmware upgrade - RT-AC68U v. 386.9. The hard disk never goes into standby (as it used to) and it chugging away non-stop ... as this is in my home office, it's annoying to listen to...

Could this be worked around by modifying the Main_TrafficMonitor_daily.asp page in the www folder? I'd be perfectly happy if these erronious numbers were either 1: Set to 0, or 2: copied from the previous day ... at least that'd bring some the charge back inline and allow for *some*...
