I saw the same message on my ET-12. I got it to appear twice and both times was when I had just connected with the app. Perhaps it's the Asus app creating an SSH type tunnel?
Probably going to keep the ET-12s. Overall, quite happy with them in terms of performance. Apparently others have seen that upload speed issue as well. There's a Reddit thread on the topic:

I just picked up a pair of ET12 routers. They are great so far with coverage and the firmware isn't bad either. I am running OpenVPN to a NordVPN server. The Merlin Firmware has the killswitch ability and an exclusion table. That is functionality I would like to have.
Is there any timeline...
