Will I need a license to run these switches? I read somewhere that functionality depends on the license ...
Also, will I need special software to manage these?
@coxhaus
Here are second hand prices:
Cisco WS-C3750G-24TS (1.5U) is $56
Cisco WS-C3750G-24TS (1U) is $71
Cisco WS-C3750G-24PS is $85
Cisco WS-C3750G-48TS is $85
Cisco WS-C3750G-48PS is $100
@Trip
I checked the local used market and got some prices. I have yet to check if they are available with English UI....
I think if I am paying more than around 350 USD, I might as well try to get something new ...
Any comments on the following prices would be appreciated...
Cisco Catalyst...
@coxhaus I initially agree that it would be worth going with an established brand but @Trip has a point WRT Huawei.
As mentioned, the problem now is that I need to be able to get whatever device in English. So it looks like a totally non-technical issue might be the deciding factor.
I will look...
A separate question on the wifi part.... If I get a dedicated AP (rather than a router acting as an AP), will I always need a dedicated controller?
If so, is it this controller that connects to the core switch?
If I just install the software on a PC, will this PC need to always stay switched on?
@Trip @coxhaus
The Huawei S1720-52GWR-PWR-4P is costing around the same price as the Cisco SG250X-24
The problem I am facing now is trying to get the switch in English. All the suppliers I have asked only supply in Chinese so far!
@MarkyPancake
The info was provided to give an idea of prices, but you mentioned a good point to consider.
My TP-Link router is in Chinese only but the QNAP I bought here was in English (but I did check that before buying).
Also, if you are importing, it is probably not worth it as products...
Thanks @Trip
I'll check those out.
As for used products, I am not sure if they are worth it unless the price difference compared to new is significant. I will still check them out anyway.
You could try taobao.com and tmall.com as they are generally slightly cheaper than jd.com however, the locals tell me jd.com sells new original products whereas the other websites might contain second hand or refurbished products also...
I'm in China at the moment and these are the prices of the aforementioned Asus routers as of 10 June 2020.
I can't read Chinese but it looks like there is a big sale on 17 June 2020 so they might be cheaper then:
Asus AX86U

1869 RMB = 265USD
Asus AX88U...
I've been trying to find the Zyxel switch but it doesn't seem to be available in China.
The Cisco POE 48 port switches with POE are too expensive.
Would a Cisco SG250-26-K9 switch work assuming the cameras stay as they are and their switches just plug into the new switch?
@Trip @coxhaus
I read some stuff on STP and why it is needed but given my current setup, I do not think I will have any looping problems as each switch only has only one route to the router.
As for a 48 port switch with POE (for the cameras) .... wow.... I didn't realise they are so expensive...
@Trip
The only problem I can see with a single switch is what happens if it fails. At the moment, if a single switch fails, the damage is limited to certain parts of the network and I can always move the connections to other switches on the network to get things working temporarily.
Also, will...
@Trip
See attached image. The areas on green require good wifi coverage.
Wifi would be nice to have in the areas in yellow.
I am not bothered about the areas with no colour as we have wired ethernet sockets in most of those areas or there is no wifi used in those locations.
At the moment, the...
