I was able to change my modem to "DHCP client" and forward the port for the OpenVPN successfully. I can connect to my router via OpenVPN on my and my wife's iPhones. I did have to restart the ASUS router this morning to be able to connect again though.

I have talked with them about it and since the modem is functioning correctly they are no help when changing from anything but the default settings.

Call me a liar. I just tried it again and it connected and is working for the time being. I'm going to set up the port forwarding and see if that sticks.

My WAN connection said "waiting for IP" but never connected. Its an option on my modem but its apparently forbidden by my ISP.

I have tried adding my ASUS router to the DMZ on the modem and I still have a double NAT. When I setup a Static NAT the traffic stops. Would setting up DDNS help me? I'm running out of options.
