ext4 formatted USB disk shown as full

It could be files you have deleted but are still opened by some processes, space will be freed after those processes close these files. You can use lsof to check what files are opened by what process.

FTP on LAN, SFTP on WAN

If you don't have sftp-server installed, you can just use SCP protocol (instead of SFTP), of course, you need to find a client that supports SCP, for example, winscp: https://winscp.net/eng/docs/scp

Do I need a VPN approach?

You can also use VPN services such as Zerotier (free), or hamachi (not free), in this case you don't have to install/run VPN server, just run client. Zerotier client is open source, I compiled my client running on my ASUS router.

    Optware compilation packages error

Sometimes the error "not found" really means "failed to load the executable". Try some tools such as ldd /opt/bin/automake strace /opt/bin/automake and check if there are any problems. I don't quite understand your question here... Check your /etc/profile, if it source...

    Optware compilation packages error

Sorry I just realized you are running optware, not optware-ng. What's in your /mmc/usr/bin and /mmc/usr/sbin? optware-ng does not have /opt/usr/bin and /opt/usr/sbin, I am not sure optware though, do you want to move /opt/sbin:/opt/bin: before /mmc/usr/bin:/mmc/usr/sbin: and try again?

    Optware compilation packages error

maybe try to upgrade to newer automake? mine is 1.15-4 on my router (optware-ng): # ipkg list | grep ^automake automake - 1.15-4 - Creates GNU standards-compliant Makefiles from template files automake1.10 - 1.10.3-3 - Creates GNU standards-compliant Makefiles from template files automake1.14...

    Optware or Entware

To be fair, many ASUS routers still use kernel 2.6. Even entware-ng has gcc for some archs, it's considered "beta".

    Optware or Entware

If you want to natively compile something, then optware-ng is better, because entware-ng does not even have gcc package.

    Where is stored system time?

The time is set by init(rc), see rc's source code, common.c:setup_timezone(). For RT-AC66U, if system time is before RC_BUILDTIME (Aug 1 00:00:00 GMT 2015) then it is set to RC_BUILDTIME.

I also have problems with Comcast's IPv6 I am currently a Comcast Home Business user, and using Comcast's SMC (modem+router) for getting a static external IP. SMC's LAN1: any computer in this LAN gets working IPv6 IP correctly, e.g., Windows OS reports "IPv6 connectivity: internet", my ASUS...

Since this thread is NOT an official release, would you mind to modify the subject and add "unofficial build" to avoid further confusions? Thanks.

it does not work if the hackers switch to static IP, practically they will try to do that anyway.
