    Your correct in that the 2.4 GHz band on the WNDR3700 is for b/g/n, however you need to be sure you are using the right security in the router & client....try the WPA-PSK(TKIP) + WPA-PSK(AES) security setting in the router wireless settings (2.4 GHz).
