Netgear X4S OpenWRT Range and Cake vs AC86U Merlin

If you fall back to standard qos-scripts (luci-app-qos), which uses hsfc+fq_codel, you can do prioritization by TCP port. This may or may not work better in your situation. You would give up the per host fairness of cake, you might win by lowering the priority of your usenet . If you try this...

Netgear X4S OpenWRT Range and Cake vs AC86U Merlin

The nice thing about SQM with cake (or fq_codel) is that it doesn't rely on categorization to get it right. It doesn't really throttle bandwidth signficantly, but rather ensures that latency stays low. This keeps your web browsing, VOIP, and other interactive things snappy, without significantly...

    Netgear R7800 and LEDE/OpenWRT

OpenWrt now supports software flow offloading, which isn't quite as fast as hardware NAT acceleration, but it's pretty close. With a fast CPU, like the one in the R7800, it's a non-issue with or without SW flow offload. That is until you enable QoS, which isn't compatible with SW flow off load...

    Please measure bufferbloat

Forgot to mention - Streamboost still relies on prioritization a bit too much. One of the great things about OpenWrt SQM/QoS is that this is not required at all. It Just Works (TM), regardless of what applications you're using.

    Please measure bufferbloat

It's fine if you're only doing one thing at a time that's not using all your bandwidth. But try to Skype/Facetime/game while you're online backup (e.g. Crashplan, iCloud, etc.) is running. Or try the same while several members of the household stream Netflix/Youtube in HD. Another good example...

    QOS causing high pings

I would argue that a proper QoS environment doesn't require prioritizing applications. It just works. And that is pretty much what OpenWrt QoS/SQM with fq_codel does.

    Please measure bufferbloat

Not really. Try the dslreports test and you'll see the impact of saturating your connection on latency. Low latency is the key to any real-time application, like VOIP, gaming, and even web browsing. When you enable QoS/AQM with fq_codel and set the bandwidth limits appropriately, you move the...

I just want to be able to game while people torrent

There are cheaper routers with Streamboost that would serve you well. They've also been around a bit longer and likely have bugs fleshed out a bit more. Zyxel NBG 6716: http://www.zyxel.com/us/en/products_services/nbg6716.shtml?t=p D-Link DGL-5500...

    NETGEAR R7500 Nighthawk X4 AC2350 Router

There's already early support in the kernel and openwrt for ipq806x, so the main firmware + routing should be a non-issue. Really just a question of how to interface to the QTN 5 GHz stuff.

Nighthawk Isn't Improving My Home Networking Issues

How are you testing? Maybe you should also try a wired connection to eliminate wireless as a possible cause of trouble. You could also try connecting directly to your cable modem (also wired) to eliminate the router as a possible problem. Could you also define "crapping out on me"? Have...

    NETGEAR R7500 Nighthawk X4 AC2350 Router

Thanks that's very helpful and a great explanation. So it sounds like you'd be able to get any kernel version up and running, meaning you hopefully won't get stuck the way broadcom is? IMO fq_codel support is pretty much essential today and you need a recent kernel for that (>3.5). Given that...

    NETGEAR R7500 Nighthawk X4 AC2350 Router

Does Quantenna actually have open source drivers for their wireless cards? Something that can be used by OpenWrt? Or is this a pre-compiled binary driver? I don't think Qualcomm should be an issue in general - they have some of the best open source wireless drivers for ath9k. Ath10k works...

any need to consider buffer bloat with Asus fw of any origin?

Unfortunately, Streamboost is the only current commercial implementation with fq_codel that I'm aware of. Everybody else is stuck on much older kernels and probably hasn't even heard of the terms "bufferbloat" or "fq_codel." Buffalo *might* have support in their DD-WRT equipped routers if...
