All the features
Hi Greg,
If you want all the same enterprise features of their system (de-duplication, unlimited snapshots, writable clones, compression, more) with a greener footprint, give EON try. You, bring your own server and disks :)...

Give EON a look
Give EON a look. Runs on a USB key, saves one disk port, eliminates OS disk failure and based on the latest enterprise source of illumos/openindiana

No EON has not been ported to ARM. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that port you refer to of Opensolaris is really old.
As far as I know Openindiana or Illumos has not been ported.

I would also look into striped mirror RAID-10 for better ZFS, IOPs performance compared to RAID-Z2. Yes, the performance comes at the cost of burning disks.
I'm also a bit biased, but I would go with ZFS.
-If your hardware dies the pool can be taken to a different machine with different...
Is that performance writing over CIFS or NFS? Keep in mind that NFS does sync writes which lowers the performance numbers of ZFS.

Embedded Operating system/Networking (EON), RAM based live ZFS NAS appliance is released on Genunix! This release marks the end of SXCE releases and Sun Microsystems as we know it! It is dubbed the Sun-set release! Many thanks to Al at Genunix.org for download hosting and serving the Opensolaris...
I'd say give EON a twirl (but I'm biased)
simon,
I'd recommend a min of an atom 330 (dual core) or better yet one of the newer intel D510 (mount olives) with 4 sata port. Asus makes a nice natural convection board with one drawback, 2 sata ports, but that may be enough with 2x2TB depending...
Eon
YeOldeStonecat,
Feel free to give EON a try, it will offer you ZFS enterprise grade storage features and for firewall features IPF, which is very similar to the rule syntax in pfsense (IIRC).

EON ZFS storage
tormorian,
Are you saying if you run updimg.sh after booting from the DOM the changes are not being preserved?
Are the files you changed in /mnt/eon0/.backup?
I'm also a little puzzled why your static configured image from the booted USB was not copied to the DOM. The only...
Embedded Operating system/Networking (EON), RAM based live ZFS NAS appliance is released on Genunix! This is the first EON release with inline Deduplication features! Many thanks to Genunix.org for download hosting and serving the opensolaris community.

List of EON features

biased input
I say give EON (http://eonstorage.blogspot.com) a look. Native ZFS storage. Can run from RAM booted from USB or CF. Requires getting your hands a little dirty but worth for the freedom and performance gained. Pretty soon it will have de-duplication!
No special controllers needed...
Great feedback
Good to here from you 00Roush,
Thanks for the feedback. As always great info. The intermittent flushing is part by design and could be part because you've reached buffering limits + max speed of the pool (as you stated).
Sometimes you can see it, when it is a network...
