Just to close the loop... You were correct... the original NIC was an onboard one... I got a new card and so far no problems. I have a feeling it's actually a bit faster and steadier than the old one... on the old one I could see some speed fluctuations, but not now. I'm guessing onboard stuff...

Yes, repeated a few times before I got wise. It happens on the from-machine. I only download on the from-machine and then copy files to the to-machine. So it seems when the old switch reset, it also affected the download. I'm going to get a new NIC on PC2 (the to-machine) in January, and ask...

I saw the activity lights go off on the old switch at every failure. Haven't observed that happening on the new switch, I wasn't watching the one time that a copy failed (so far) on the new switch. I can't see the problem being other devices on the network - just a couple laptops using wifi...

Would a bad cable cause all the lights to go out in the old switch? I would think some loose connection might cause that connection to have issues, but why would it cause the switch to reset? Is there a way to test the NIC?

Thanks dosborne, The connection is wired, and switch is unmanaged - just a simple switch. Sorry, novice here. How do I know if the port shows the correct speed? Sometimes when I watch the copy, it seems to start out fast and then slows down. What kind of diagnostic or speed test?

Thanks RMerlin, I'm kind of a novice... I know how to ping, but how do I know what are lost packets or spikes in delay? And since the error is active now, since the only way to clear it out is to reboot, it would be good to do the pings now?
