    Yes, but I don't think that is the reason it switched out on me. I'll have to watch closely but I think it did this with a non-DFS channel as well. I'm connected to 104 now without any issues.

    So this is odd. I set the "Control Channel" on the RT-AX88U, but after a while it decided to use a different channel. Any idea why it would do this? For example, I set the channel to 100 and that stuck but when I came back a day later the router was using channel 36 (42).

    Yeah, the problem is that my ethernet ports are 1gig and I'm trying to see how much I can go over 1gig with my 1700 160MHz connection. I think I can run iperf briefly to do that and then disable it.

    I think in the US the FCC re-enabled some DFS channels for use (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels), but right I shouldn't assume that just because my router lets me do it it's okay... EDIT: and right, I was just wondering how much over 1,000Mbps I can get with the 160MHz AC...

    In the notes I've read here, people seem to recommend avoiding DFS channels. I ask because for 5GHz, my neighbors are on top of the non-DFS channels. This definitely affected my throughput - a lot. Switching to a DFS channel seems to have fixed this, but am I setting myself up for other...

    Oh right... this is actually pretty funny. The good part is that the 160MHz connections get me to the point where I can max my D/L capacity of my ISP - that is 1Gig and I get about 930Mbps. But, since the ether ports on the RT-AX88U are all 1Gig, I can't really go faster than that via iperf...

    @coxhaus - one use case for VPN I've heard is for people who don't like the way their ISPs throttle certain types of traffic (gaming or video or some such thing) and they try to use a VPN to obfuscate the packets. I don't know if this really works or not...

    Thank you @RMerlin ! I saw that you have iperf included in asuswrt, but it didn't occur to me that the router might not be powerful enough to do this kind of benchmark well. Ethernet to wifi makes a lot of sense and I'll give that a try.

    I'm trying to figure out the maximum transfer rate over WIFI. speedtest.net was great for initial rough numbers (and for combined ISP + router performance), but I'd like to see how my router is doing on it's own.

    I figured the disk write speed would be very fast relative to WIFI throughput speed, but perhaps I am wrong there. I will take a look at iperf, thanks!

    I was a little surprised that my router doesn't come with some kind of throughput measurement tool. I figured I could mount a disk on the router and measure throughput using "rsync" to copy random file over. Is there a standard way of measuring throughput to/from the router?
