Wifi vs different types of metal ?

We know that Wifi and 'metal' don't mix so well. Does anyone know how bad different metals are in blocking signals? Especially aluminum vs steel? We are looking at including a lot of Phillips Hue GU10 (Zigbee) and LIFX GU10 (WiFi) downlights in some houses. Legally they have to be in approved...

    Stable/Reliable Unifi AP? PRO? LITE?

Mostly Apple iPhones, iPads, watches, and MacBooks. Also a couple of fitbit scales, two Tesla's, and a variety of video and still camera's.

    Stable/Reliable Unifi AP? PRO? LITE?

Thanks. Most devices currently connect AC which is definitely faster than N. FWIW I agree with their prioritizing reliability over speed. When the AP-AC's first came out (2013?) the AC performance was quite poor but improved dramatically with the first couple of firmware updates.

    Stable/Reliable Unifi AP? PRO? LITE?

We have some of the original AP AC units. After a bit of struggle with it dropping Mac's we have now been fairly stable for about 18 months w/ controller 3.2.1, firmware 3.2.1.2601, and keeping the controller turned off (disconnects seems much more prevalent when the controller was left running...

    All directories are Sharepoint ??

I have a DS1513+ running DSM 5.2-5644 Update 2. From my Macbook finder this morning every directory is showing up as 'Sharepoint' with -- for created, modified, and last opened. I'm logged in with an administrator account. We have 7 macs that access this NAS and only one windows machine and it...

    Securely connecting legacy devices ?

Yep, that's what I was referring to in setting up a different network. Poor terminology on my part. I think that should work but I'm not sure how best to secure it since that effectively opens up authentication quite a bit (vs everything being Enterprise/Radius).

    Securely connecting legacy devices ?

Running Ubiquity AP AC's. Single network configured as WPA-Enterprise. Everyone is happy except one single legacy device that only supports WPAII-PSK. I'm thinking just create another network for WPAII-Personal for this one device. Is there a way to limit to just a single mac address? Are...

Mount WinXP drives in Synology 1513+ ?

Found an old drive to play with and it looks like the 5 internal bays will only function as DSM volumes. The external USB and eSata ports will read a driver as is. Does not appear to be a way to get the internal bays to read it as an external drive. That would have saved a lot of extra effort...

Mount WinXP drives in Synology 1513+ ?

My wife's desktop PC came up with a disk error last night. It is now refusing to boot Win XP. It pulls up the Win XP logo screen and that's it. The drives are mirrored so I'm fearful that it's a virus not an actual disk problem since it seems a disk problem would be only one disk and it should...

Setting up firewall on Ubiquity Edgerouter Lite ?

Thank you guys. I did the wizard, I think, so hopefully good to go then. I ran GRC tests and all looked good from their standpoint. Performance of this router is quite amazing.

Setting up firewall on Ubiquity Edgerouter Lite ?

Based on recommendations here I've replaced my old BEFSX with an Edgerouter Lite. Performance improvement is exceptional. Now I'm looking for recommendations on how best to set it up for tight security. We have fairly simple SOHO needs. Don't need remote access for anything at this point (may...

Mini switch powered by POE ?

Thanks all. My lack of understanding of how PoE works created some confusion over Steve's recommendation for using an inserter—my not realizing that these usually work backwards as well. So, I now have a couple of old Trendnet switches being powered by PoE. Much easier than trying to get...

Mini switch powered by POE ?

Thanks Steve. I'm looking for a switch that itself is powered by POE, not one that provides POE. I already have POE from one of our central Cisco switches.

Mini switch powered by POE ?

I'm looking for a small (3 - 5 ports) switch that is powered via POE for locations where a wall wart would be difficult. All I've come up with so far is a POEmax 8000 that is $109 and the Camswitch Plus 4 that is $198. Was hoping for something for less than $50. Any ideas? Thanks,
