Two RT-AC86Us, two years apart, newer one main router?

I appreciate the reply. I remember early on in this model's lifetime there were some complaints about the 2.4 GHz radio failing as well as heat / fan concerns. That was the main motivation for asking, but no issues with my current device so I think I'll leave it be. Thanks again.

Two RT-AC86Us, two years apart, newer one main router?

I bought an RT-AC86U in Feb 2019 and have been running Merlin since its birth. I just bought a 2nd RT-AC86U to enable AiMesh, wired backhaul. Is anyone aware of any tweaks/changes/upgrades to HW/cooling/etc of the RT-AC86U over the last two years that would warrant me putting the new one in as...

    ASUS RT-AC86U firmware release 3.0.0.4.384.45149 12/05/2018

If it's that bad, have you considered downgrading to an earlier firmware? Any issue with that folks? Just wondering if 45149 can be properly downgraded.

    ASUS RT-AC86U firmware release 3.0.0.4.384.45149 12/05/2018

Yeah, I've been following. Thanks for the reply. I've also read about a lot of 2.4 GHz radio issues, but not sure that's tied to FW version (seems HW). I still have a number of 2.4 GHz devices, so was hoping to keep that stable as well.

    ASUS RT-AC86U firmware release 3.0.0.4.384.45149 12/05/2018

So .45149 isn't happening in my house, any thoughts on the most stable fw version besides the latest?

    RT-AC68U types Firmware version 3.0.0.4.384_45149 for RT-AC68U/R/W/P, RT-AC1900/U/P and RT-AC66U_B1

What do you mean by "still cannot update DHCP reservations?" I had a similar issue where anytime I added a DHCP assignment/reservation, it would be blown away upon reboot.

    ASUS RT-AC86U firmware release 3.0.0.4.384.45149 12/05/2018

I see the number of clients in the client list jump all over the place just like you describe since going to this latest FW 2 days ago. I also see a constant "Assoc" and "Disassoc" messages with a MAC address appended to each within the system Log every 5-10 min. Not sure if there's a relation.

Manually Assigned IP List Gone After Reboot

Thanks for all of your help. I've performed a factory reset (along with a firmware update that released today for Asus stock). I did another factory reset after the firmware update completed just to be sure. I've entired a manual assignment and rebooted. So far, so good. I went back and...

Client Names mostly just MAC addresses

    Agreed. Same thought here.

Manually Assigned IP List Gone After Reboot

admin@RT-AC86U:/tmp/home/root# nvram get jffs2_format admin@RT-AC86U:/tmp/home/root# No value returned. I actually just assumed Reformat JFFS was unique to Merlin, as I don't see it in stock (unless I missed it).

Manually Assigned IP List Gone After Reboot

Reformat JFFS at next boot: is that in Merlin only? If I stay on ASUS stock, how is that accomplished?

Manually Assigned IP List Gone After Reboot

Also, should I start over differently than usual to ensure this gets wiped out? I was just going to Restore Factory Defaults in the Administration tab. Would going to Merlin change anything in this scenario (I know your fork won't work b/c of newer code base)?

So anything else I should try or capture before I perhaps reflash/reset/clear and start over?
