Good call. It might make just as much sense as you say.

    ReadyNAS as a DROBO?

I'm honestly not sure... I'd be happy to solicit testimonials from owners. If the Drobo has finally hit its stride, I'd be happy to own one as I think it works best for my needs. But I read a lot of bad stories online (such is the nature of forums etc. though, people show up to complain).

What if my backup isn't my only backup? (i.e. as I implied, I would have 9 drives for a 6 drive unit).

    ReadyNAS as a DROBO?

True, but if you read my edits, people aren't getting 70-80, they're getting 30-50. So they're getting HALF the speed of a good NAS with a direct attached solution. That's not acceptable IMO. This would be pretty simple for me if I didn't have the associated costs of backing up whatever I...

Crashplan has no limit based on size either. Their only extra charges are if you want to seed or restore via disk because you have a lot of data. As far as the backup costs, I understand, I'm just looking for options though. I mean, I could have three NASes, one live, one backup onsite, one...

Why would backblaze solve my excess data charges concern? Crashplan does offer a work around for backing up a NAS but honestly I have so many concerns around this overall that it might not work. I saw you responded to my other thread. Bear in mind its all related... its all the same...

    ReadyNAS as a DROBO?

There are internet posts abound complaining about Drobos. Even if people don't have a critical issue (data loss) they complain that they are slow. I've seen numbers in the 40s and at best in the 70-80MBps even over eSATA, which is really, really slow. The culprit seems to be the fact that...

Need help with storage and backup strategy

How do I backup a data set that is larger than the largest external drives. I.e. once I get to 4TB it's going to get very hard to backup. Adding multiple backup drives will add a ton of complexity as I'll have to modify my backup job for destination disk A vs B.

    ReadyNAS as a DROBO?

Any particular reason, especially when, to the best of my knowledge QNAP doesn't even offer the expansion flexibility I said I needed?

    ReadyNAS as a DROBO?

I don't really need a NAS. What I need is a device I can share from my primary PC (iMac) which is very flexible in how the storage can be expanded. What I need is a Drobo. But I've read review after review after blog after forum post after rant about how buggy they are and how slow they are...

Need help with storage and backup strategy

First post here but I've been reading through a lot of reviews, etc. Great site! I am undergoing a project to put all of my DVD library (~700 disks) into iTunes so I can stream them to my Apple TVs and put some on my iPad when I travel for work, etc. I think this is around 1.5TB right now...
