Need a better automated backup solution

I wasn't clear in my initial post, but tried to clarify in the last one. Carbonite does not load the entire 50GB image to the cloud. It only uploads documents and the like, just the stuff in your user folders. Just like any other online backup like Mozy, CrashPlan, etc. Entire disk images...

Huh? I thought you were recommending the Synology DS214+ ? Does it support just Link Aggregation but not Multichannel? https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/DS214+

I know... The online backup piece of Carbonite functions like any other service. It only keeps copies of your documents, pictures, etc. online - not your entire disk image. The entire disk image is only stored locally.

Need a better automated backup solution

Carbonite has a good solution - $59 per year for a single system gives you unlimited online backup space. For $99 per year you can hook up your own local hard drive and it does daily image backups. Sure it might be kinda pricey for readers of this board. But it might be a good fit for your...

I agree as well, but for the customers I support 80% of the time when a restore is called for it's because of a bad virus or disk crash which means I want a whole image. Time Machine is great for that because you can restore a single file or an entire system image from any point in time. The...

Need a better automated backup solution

I get that a server needs to be on 24/7. What I don't get is why you were complaining that it had to be on 24/7. As you said, it's a server. And, it's not a desktop. Ever try running Internet Explorer on your Windows Server? You can't do anything with it as all external sites are blocked by...

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials is $349. The difference is not just the missing features but the Dashboard and it's wizards. Essentials is not that difficult to set up and maintain because of the Dashboard and all the wizards. I know the standard version is much more complicated and more...

Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 OEM - 64-bit (10 CALs) [Old Version] is still for sale for $149. Saw a copy on eBay for just a license key for $49. It's too bad they don't offer it any more. It was only $49 when it was a current product. The old copies floating around are bringing a...

How to build a spectacularly fast network and server for small engineering dept.

Can't make a laptop the "server" because any one of the three could be out of the office at any moment. The type of server I'm thinking about would be a small Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials running on an HP MicroServer or Lenovo TS-140 style box. Neither are more than $500 each plus the...

Need a better automated backup solution

Recent Windows server products do very well with this. There's a client piece that runs on each PC. Nightly backups that you can restore as a full image or just individual files. I've used this for customers networks. Versions include: Windows Home Server 2011 Windows Server 2011...

Looks like I've found a hard limit, the expansion card in the Dell Precision M4800 laptop workstations: From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExpressCard At this point it sounds like I can focus my design on Russell's ideas with teaming two NICs for a 2Gb network. If I were to try for 3 NICs...

    Would this be a good 4 port NIC from Intel? Intel E1G44HTBLK Server Adapter I340-T4 (Bulk Pack) 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI-Express 2.0 4 x RJ45 - OEM for $259?

Thanks both of you for those posts. I know at least one of the three laptops is running Windows 8.1. One is on Windows 7. Not sure about the third. I'm pretty sure they won't want to make any laptop the server since any of the three could leave the building at any time. Definitely would...

OK, it looks like I've been over-thinking this. Seems that even the most mundane SATA interfaces today outpace 1 Gb Ethernet: SATA 2 is 300MB/s vs 1Gb Ethernet at 125MB/s. And those are theoretical limits. I think I saw that 1 Gb Ethernet sustains 60MB/s somewhere. I need to look into...

You're right. They connect their laptop to the CNC machine with a USB to Serial adapter. Can't get much slower than that :D But my comment about them having CNC machines might have thrown off the discussion. Connecting to the shop equipment isn't what this is about. It's about file sharing...
