    Read some info on the 30/30/30 rule explained here. I didn't try it this time but will consider it next time I have an update and see if it helps. I did seem to get the device back to working again. I turned off guest wifi networks. Then restart the device. The 2.4 GHZ wifi SSID then popped up...

    RT-AC68U No Longer Broadcasts SSID for 2.4 GHz WiFi

    My RT-AC68U suddenly no longer broadcasts the 2.4 GHz wifi network. You can see it in the admin screen of the router, but clients do not see it's SSID. Clients can see and connect to the 5 GHz network. I'm trying to contact Asus support at their site but at the moment they are having issues...
