    That could be the reason, but Asus official firmware fits on V1 and on V2 too. Does official Asus firmware do some magic trick to do that?

    So, what's the best answer to nzwayne question: Why some V2 machines are not Rmerlin supported? There should be exact information on https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/, that "Rmarlin is NOT supporting V2 Asus builds", or with some effort a minified firmware versions might be proposed to support...
