@Martineau - question for you... what would be the feasability of adding something like Diversion's "Follow DNSMasq" option so we can watch the queries process in real-time? It might aid in troubleshooting issues; or, what do you recommend in terms of observing the service?

FWIW I have (almost) never ejected my USB drive when rebooting. If you issue the <i>reboot</i> command at the prompt or with the button in the GUI it should be graceful.
I mean, some slowdown is going to be inevitable if you're inspecting every packet. But like I mentioned upthread, you can get a used HP T620+ on eBay for ~$125 and install pfSense...
