Low cost Tiny Box/ Mini ITX Mobo + CPU/ SoC choices: Sophos 9.x UTM Home & its Updates for 2/3 yrs

At that price, it should be! You can get two of the SmallWall 2 port firewalls for that! Yes, it has a lot more power, but the MITXPC systems can get a solid 900meg on SmallWall.

Low cost Tiny Box/ Mini ITX Mobo + CPU/ SoC choices: Sophos 9.x UTM Home & its Updates for 2/3 yrs

MITXPC also has some ready made boxes with SmallWall preinstalled. But they should be able to work with any flashed based firewall like pfSense. http://www.mitxpc.com/products.php?cat=140

    Could you help me decide?

It is still tied to the hardware, you can just export a config. When you can pull the flash out and stick it in a white box somewhere, then it is not tied to hardware. :) But it is handy to be able to move configs across the line. Some systems can not move a config from an edge router to a...

    Could you help me decide?

Commercial products are tied to the hardware. (In most cases) If you need more power, you have to start over and pay more money. Open Source Products (and software based commercial products) are not tied to the hardware, so if you need a faster nic, you get a faster nic. Now I am slightly...

    Switch recommendations wanted.

Cisco business class switches are the best made and most dependable switches on the market. I have seen them last for years in metal shops and open warehouses!. But they are priced accordingly. The small business stuff they sell is not very good. If I can not get Cisco business class, I...

Good solution for uploader but only 2mbps up?

The easiest QOS I have ever seen is the old traffic shaper from m0n0wall. It is still available in the m0n0wall fork at http://www.smallwall.org and in new hardware at http://www.mitxpc.com/products.php?cat=140 .

    Could you help me decide?

You can install m0n0wall, or SmallWall on an old terminal server with an extra nic and have a low power device that will do 45-50 meg easily. For about $40 off eBay. There is even some discussion of this right now on the SmallWall forums. http://www.smallwall.org

    CISCO Brand Routers

There are two continuations of m0n0wall that are not as heavy as pfSense or OPNsense. www.smallwall.org is one of them.

Cabling - Long Runs - Individual runs vs. using a switch

From a professional standpoint, what you are talking about is MDF/IDF for distribution. The MDF (main distribution frame) is the "server room" and a selection of home runs. The IDFs (intermediate distribution frame) are the satalite racks. Theyt are put in place due to distance, or problems...

    Newbe needs router help.

You can get full gigabit speed with full functionality here for $369.95. http://www.mitxpc.com/proddetail.php?prod=FWJNF9NMT3410 You can knock of $40 if you get the one with RealTek chips, and it will give you 500 meg... But for $200, you will need to build one based on an old PC. And you...

    CISCO Brand Routers

Cisco makes good stuff, but they charge heavily for it. And Cisco support for customers with only a few devices can be quite bad. Also, they drive you to the channel partners, and some of then could not find a clue if it hit them in the head! I have replaced a lot of Cisco routers with...

    Router Suggestions - Upgrade

You can get SmallWall (a m0n0wall fork) routers from MITXpc, and any of the Intel based nics on this page http://www.mitxpc.com/products.php?cat=140 will do full wire speed. And yes, CPU is needed if you want gigabit NAT, but most routers in this class have enough for that now. As to your...

    Simple Wired Router?

For a simple wired router, try SmallWall. www.smallwall.org It is a fork of m0n0wall when Manual Kasper decided to close it. It is VERY simple, but has good feature support. And the documentation is better then it ever was with m0n0wall. And yes, it is easier to set up then pfSense...
