    Bought a used mint AX86U. Put this latest Merlin on there. Opps! Not the pro. Okay. Put the non pro 86U. Perfection!! Bye AC86U! You served me well. Sorry your USB 3.0 port broke. Not even sure this router was used. It was too clean. The antennas still in bags. Wires still in original wrapping...

    Most of the heat problem is the firmware. There was an update that really increased temperatures. I am still on one of the pre hot firmwares. 384.19_beta2

    There was a firmware update for this router a few years ago that increased the temperatures dramatically. It was one after 384.19 b2 Was that ever fixed? Was in Asus code. Current Temperatures: 46 °C - 53 °C - 56 °C on mine with fan and old FW

    I had problems like that on 2.4 until I turned off Smart Connect.

    Router, ups and strange behaviour

    The UPS will only output a simulated sine wave when there is a power loss. Get a different UPS. My AC86U runs fine on modified square waves when the power is out. Same with cable modem.

    That UPS does not condition the power. It can lower or raise voltage when it reaches a certain point. An "online UPS" AKA "double conversion UPS" power is constantly conditioned. Much more expensive.

    RT-AC86U intermittently but constantly dropping Internet Connection

    Don't always blame the router. Your modem may be dropping connections. Check modem log if you can for critical events like T3 and T4 timeouts. Check signal levels too if you can. I think what helped me was cloning the modems mac to the router. It's been cloned a long time and I never get the...

    Much better runtime with low power devices with the proper UPS https://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/APC-Back-UPS-Connect-90-120V-Network-backup-USB-charging-ports/P-BGE90M Under Key Features, you can change the run time load and get approx results. My AC86U uses 11 watts. Should be over 4hrs...
