To Merlin or not with a new ASUS device these days?

Yep, I’ve gone down this route in 2018-2019 when the symmetric 10gbps internet connection was a challenge. Switching everything in house was not too bad of a challenge (just throw some money on it), but for routing there was nothing really offering anything close to what was needed. At that...

To Merlin or not with a new ASUS device these days?

Yep, fully understand that angle. This was also my initial aim, but that approach was made harder due to all of the actual AP’s supporting 6E/6GHz basically being unavailable on the Swedish market, and has been over the last half year. The only one available is the Ubiquity Unifi U6 Enterprise...

To Merlin or not with a new ASUS device these days?

Is it clear how the hardware block where the 10GbE ports (+2.5GbE as well I guess) are placed is connected? Are they part of a switch segment separated logically by the CPU when used in WAN and LAN modes, or are they independent physical interfaces connected to the SoC/MCU in such a way that...

To Merlin or not with a new ASUS device these days?

Great insights! I have so far not had much use of guest networks, but I do kind of see the use case for it in the shape of the separate IoT network, which I’m guessing uses the same mechanism.

To Merlin or not with a new ASUS device these days?

Yep, worth consideration at least. Although, 30-40% CPU load when running bandwidth tests (fast.com) achieving about 95% of the available bandwidth (rest of family is sleeping already so it's not a fully realistic test), would at least give half a tick in the effortlessly and effectively boxes...

To Merlin or not with a new ASUS device these days?

For the time being, yes. Current house only offers 1Gbps internet connection (did have 10Gbbps symmetrical connection prior to the move in 2019 😭) , which my EdgeRouter Lite manages without any problems. If they start offering something above gigabit, then I believe the AXE16000 might transition...

To Merlin or not with a new ASUS device these days?

Hi guys! I realize I might be in a slightly "biased" (probably a bit harsher wording than I really intend, hence in quotes), but I've just travelled back to ASUS land! Last the Router/AP had the same logo was with their early 802.11n draft router (don't remember its name, but recall it was...

    Cat8 vs 6

@Clark Griswald Aaah, how could I miss out on the spinal tap reference! :D Whoosh! Then I realized that even though I'm not a native speaker myself, the Cat9Tails may not be an obvious reference for everyone, especially non-native speakers of english...

Today's delightful new problem (10gbit/s connection incoming)

After been using the Huawei HN8255Ws for a while, it seems to work quite good. I have encountered an issue where using an external AP (a repurposed Netgear R6300v1) would make all traffic going over WLAN to be dropped every 10 minutes, while all other traffic going over the same cable...

Today's delightful new problem (10gbit/s connection incoming)

The ketchup effect in action; Just as my NICs for the softrouter I'm planning to configure is about to be delivered, I get a notification from the Swedish postal service that the ISP just has sent me a package, so today I was able to pick up the Huawei HN8255Ws and bring it home. Exact model...

Today's delightful new problem (10gbit/s connection incoming)

Another recommendation, that kind of strikes the balance in between SNB and Servethehome, is TinkerTry IT @ Home (https://tinkertry.com/) A lot less of community and more review/guide/analytical posts, with the main interaction with readers being comments on the posts. It tends to cover the area...

Today's delightful new problem (10gbit/s connection incoming)

Thanks for the pointer, it's a very good one. I actually came across the page itself when I started researching the potential use of Xeon D and Atom C3000 I've mentioned earlier in this thread, so I've been trying to keep up daily, at least with the Good Deals section as well as a good eye...

    10GbE (10GBASE-T) Switch - Edimax XGS-5008

Yes, agreed, UBNT/Mikrotik is a slightly different market. I don't think the Mikrotik CRS series are, price wise, that off from the Netgear and D-Link models however. If you're looking at switches with up to 2x 10GbE uplink, there are a few options for desktop models, especially Netgear...
