The fewer routes into the router the better and especially through an app. Remote access through VPN Server is such a better idea, if remote access really is that necessary. And for local access, 192.168……, through a browser is ideal. I’d call the failure of app access a blessing...

I enabled Apple Relay when it came out and wondered why I was seeing ads all over the iPhone, until I realised it was bypassing Diversion. You forget what a great job Diversion (and similar) does, until you turn it off. Needless to say, Apple Relay soon got the boot.
