    Backbone - fiber or UTP

IMHO, if you are running outside a building, you really can only go with fiber. Any kind of wired connection will be subject to ground issues. BTW, if done correctly, the cost of fiber will be a very small percent of the cost of everything else.

    Multiple Switches

Sounds like you are volunteering to go to people's house and help run all those extra wires ... for free!!! ;-)

So... which eco-system does one go for?

I'm a firm Non-Voice believer. 1. It never works well for me. (I think it's me, as others have little issue.) 2. As far as I know, it all reports to a cloud server to do the voice translation. There are HA systems that support cloud services and no internet. Off the top of my head, both Vera...

Cannot access private shares using hostname

I had to turn off SAMBA 2 & 3 on my home network to get sharing to work on Windows 10. This is a known problem with Windows 10 after the 1511 (?) update. This affects Windows 10 to 7 and even Windows 10 to Windows 10 machines.

Streaming home movies from an external HD

WD makes a device, but I forget the name. Live TV or TV or something like that. About the same size as the older rokus.

Confessions of a 10GbE Network Newbie

Quick question, with windows 8.1 pro on two workstations, do you still get full speed on 10Gb Ethernet? In other words, does the server have to be a server, or can it just run plain Jane Windows 8?

How important is a USB 3 connection? How about eSATA?

My $0.02. 1. eSATA (3Mb+) is faster than USB. (at least at USB 3.0 and older) USB 3.0 is almost there, but IMHO still looses out slightly over eSATA (even 3Mbps eSATA) Now if you have the need to hook up things other than file storage, USB rules. 2. USB 3.0 is MUCH faster than USB 2.0...

Best Setup To Stream HD Movies (Not Sure Where to post this)

WiFi HD streaming depends on how good your wireless connection is. If you live in the middle of nowhere, have only 2 wireless devices, and no metal between them, the new AC will probability be trouble free. If you are in an apartment and every single person has WiFi devices, most likely it...

2.4 and 5 ghz same SSID or different

I think it depends on the devices you have. If they all handle the same SSID on different APs, then do that, if they don't, assign them different names. And as someone else said, the pass of should work, and work cleanly.

2.4 and 5 ghz same SSID or different

Yes, but the cat is smart enough to ignore me. :D

Need advice / Cisco RV180 maybe?

My only gripe with my RV180, is the LONG, LONG boot time! I've booted computers from floppy drives in less time that it takes to boot/reboot.

Backup Imaging - Strategy for Laptops to NAS ?

    1. Most of my systems have 2 drives, so I just backup to the second drive, and then copy to the NAS. I also keep a 16 or 32 GB (3.0 if you can afford it!) flash drive with a copy. 2. The one machine with only 1 drive, I use the NAS, GB ethernet. I hate WiFi, and it hates me back. The only...

Backup Imaging - Strategy for Laptops to NAS ?

What I do: 1. I have a "system" drive and "data" drive on 7 of the 8 machines I maintain. If this means a single drive partitioned into 2, so be it. (I do have 1 system with just a single partition, but then I don't store any "personal" data on it, it's just a media playback device for the...

    Multiple or single cable run?

If you can, use a star style layout. If you can't, running 1 wire to a point, placing a switch/AP/router and hooking everything local there will work fine. Just remember that you now have a single wire for all those devices. Unless you are moving large files around, you'll never see any...

Keep two home NAS devices synced?

I replaced 1 of 10 of my red, and it had all zeros (or defaults) in the SMART data, but then I assume they can reset it if they wish. It looked unused, and had no scratches near the screw holes. I formatted it (full) and filled it 2 or 3 times, and checked all the data. All good. Of...
