    Ok is I have answered most of my own questions with a little playing around. My only remaining question is how can I get this router connected via L2TP with a preshared key? If try to connect without I keep getting this to many retransmissions on tunnel error.

    ok I got it all fixed up. I was working in the vpn section when I should have been working in the wan section. Switched my wan connection type from auto to pptp and filled in my creds and we are off and running :)

    Is there anyway to setup a password protected nas so that it only shows the root drive and then depending on what login you use it will show/give access to certain folders? I don't mind if I have to ssh in and do it from the terminal.

    Well ya you are right, I can mount any folder on my nas individually as a network drive, but without password protection I can actually mount the whole NAS as a network drive making it appear like it would if I directly connected via usb.
