The only firmware that i found superior to Merlin is those Chinese fork (Xiaobao and Koolshare) of Merlin itself, they take the latest version and they add more useful options (more about rooting, encryptions, VPN, DNS, torenting, Adblockers.... Etc ) they even add an app store, you can install...
